Dodo Birds and Massey Ferguson Tractors

Dec 30, 2013

You may know Mauritius as the home of the now-extinct Dodo. It’s an island nation in the Indian Ocean more than 1,200 miles southeast off the coast of Africa.

Honestly, I didn’t know where Mauritius was until I met somewhere from there. And then when I read this article on the AGCO blog, it made me think of our friend, and since it was such a fun story I had to share.

It’s neat that they can say what the first tractor ever delivered to this island nation was. Kind of makes me think about guys like my grandpa talking about the first farmer who bought a tractor in the county.

In 1953, the first tractor to land on the shores of Mauritius was a 28 hp Ferguson TEA20, built in Coventry, England.

Today, Massey Ferguson tractors are celebrating 60 years of distribution the island, where they are used intensively (1,500 to 2,500 hours a year) for sugar cane production. These tractors are sourced from the Massey Ferguson factories in Brazil and France, and the brand reportedly has more than 50% market share on the island.
