Corn Breaks Out Technically, Soybeans Sell-Off Even After Strong Export Sales Reported

Jan 31, 2013

Once again soybean export sales beat trade expectations, but beans traded lower on the day. If we look at the numbers a bit closer most of the sales were for the 13/14 crop year and the total for 12/13 was actually a bit light on the week. We still think that soybean sales to date are well ahead of pace to meet USDA expectations. Cody and Logan breakdown this morning's USDA export sales report and look at March Corn technicals.

South American Weather Continues To Whip The Futures Market, What's The Bottom Line??

Jan 24, 2013

Cody and Logan breakdown the technical and fundamental factors impacting price action as South American weather seems to dominate the trade day-to-day. EIA ethanol production data showed ethanol production picked up 8,000 barrels per day in production, but overall our models still show the USDA over estimating corn going to ethanol during the current marketing year. Tomorrow's export sales report will be watched closely by the trade, below are market expectations. Once again the trade is looking for very lean export sales of corn and strong export sales of soybeans, with the high side of expectations near 1 million metric tons.

Corn: 200k-450k tonnes

Soybeans: 750k-950k tonnes

Wheat: 350k-550k tonnes

Jan 15, 2013

This afternoon on GrainTV Brock and Logan discuss the rally in the grain markets. For corn and wheat the rally seemed driven by continuation buying in reaction to the reports last Friday. Soybeans rally was technically driven with managed money stepping into the marketplace and pushing the oilseed higher. Commitment of Traders report and export inspections are also examined.

USDA Report Reactions

Jan 11, 2013

We just got the January WASDE report and at the moment see corn and wheat moving higher as beans trade lower. Corn ending stock fell 45 million bushels largely driven by a 300 million bushel increase to feed/residual. Soybeans ending stocks were raised 5 million bushels, roughly in line with trade expectations. One thing to note is that crushings were raised while the USDA left export sales unchanged once again. Wheat ending stocks were off 38 million bushels due to feed and residual getting raised by 35 million bushels. Tune in to the audio commentary for the full breakdown of the numbers, and tune in to GrainTV this afternoon for our take on how this changes the grain market.
