Editor's Notebook: Pick Your Place to Go Just For Fun

September 28, 2013
By: Charlene Finck, Farm Journal Editor

In my nearly three decades as a national journalist covering agriculture, I’ve been blessed with many once-in-a-lifetime moments. As someone who enjoys people and hearing their stories, I never tire of meeting new people, seeing impressive boot-strapped farm operations, touring factories, visiting world headquarters, seeing cool new technology or sharing a meal one-on-one. Nothing beats that first-hand connection.

Woven together, I have travelled to every state but three for work or family time. That’s lots of windshield time, many "rolling crop tours" and first-hand perspectives on our nation’s farm footprint—something I couldn’t have imagined while growing up in rural Audrain County, Mo., with only 25,621 people.

This summer, as we drove through the Flint Hills to move our daughter Caroline to Kansas State University, we were talking about how cool it would be to take a farmer with me everywhere I
go. That’s not practical or possible, but it sparked this invitation to our Farm Journal readers:

If you have the drive to tour a machinery factory, visit an agribusiness CEO in his or her office, go behind the scenes of an agribusiness or simply have breakfast or supper with one of the smartest folks in agriculture, here is your chance!

Send an e-mail or a letter letting me know where in the U.S. you’d like to go and why. We’ll put all of the entries into a hat, draw a winner and start planning the VIP trip. Naturally, we’ll pay for your expenses and write about the experience. My e-mail is listed below, and my mailing address is: P.O. Box 958, Mexico, MO 65265. Make sure we receive your note by Dec. 1. I look forward to your ideas!
