It is important for the next generation to successfully manage the farm, but how do they become ready? Learn from a real-life family, the Larsons of North Dakota, in Episode 13 of "Leave a Legacy TV."

Carl Larson Jr. moved back to the farm after school to manage the farm with his brother, Eric, and is thankful that his dad was there to help him. Although at times he felt like his dad was just telling him what to do, he has realized that there was a reason. The family has gone through the succession process, one that took seven years, and now the two brothers manage the farm together.

How do you make sure young generations stay sharp?

It is very important that young farmers grow their business savvy and leadership skills. The Larson brothers attend a lot of conferences and are always furthering their education. They have also delegated management responsibilities. Carl works in the office and handles the business affairs and Eric spends most of his time outside, in the shop and on the tractor. The two have a meeting every Monday, including an agenda, to talk about everything that needs to get done during the week. This ensures that they don’t miss anything!

"Those meetings are very important to our operation," Eric says. "The guy that isn’t having them on his farm is probably rolling his eyes, thinking, ‘You see him every day,’ but let me tell you, there are a lot of things talked about in those meetings we would miss otherwise."

How do you find the balance between family and business?

It can often be hard for siblings co-managing a farm to find a balance between work and family. The Larsons have found that all of that sorted itself out by chance.
"We don’t really get together a whole lot," Eric says. "An occasional gathering at the lake but we really do our own thing."

The Larson family is a great example of a family that has successfully transitioned leadership to brothers who make great business partners as well. Learn more about the Larsons’ path on the road of succession by watching the full episode.
