LEAVE A LEGACY
JUNE 27, 2014

THE FARM JOURNAL LEGACY PROJECT PRESENTS “LEAVE A LEGACY” AND NOW YOUR HOST KEVIN SPAFFORD. THOUGH TECHNICALLY NOT FARMING, FISHING IS THE ACQUISITION OF FOOD. THE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES EMPLOYED BY COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN MAY BE AN INDICATION OF THINGS TO COME FOR OUR FARMING COMMUNITY. WEATHERING DIFFICULT AND CHALLENGING CONFRONTATION, THE COMMERCIAL FISHING INDUSTRY MAY SERVE AS A BEACON FOR OUR FAMILY FARMERS. FISHERMEN HAVE BEEN CHALLENGED BY REGULATION AND FORCED INTO PRACTICES THAT MAY BE MORE PUNITIVE THAN PRODUCTIVE, BUT FOR EIGHT GENERATIONS AND COUNTING, MEMBERS OF THE JOYCE FAMILY HAVE PLIED THE WATERS OFF OF MAINE TO PROVIDE FOOD TO AN INCREASINGLY DISCRIMINATING BUYER. FOR A LOBSTERMAN, SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES ARE NOT JUST WORDS.
THEY ARE KEYS TO LASTING SUCCESS AND CONTINUING OPPORTUNITIES FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.
CLINTON GRIFFITHS WILL TAKE US TO SWANS ISLAND AND INTRODUCE US TO THE JOYCE FAMILY. SIX MILES AND A SHORT FERRY RIDE OFF THE COAST OF MAINE. SOMEWHAT DISCONNECTED BUT STILL CONNECTED. WE'VE GOT THE INTERNET. OTHER THAN THAT, WE'RE FAIRLY SECLUDED. ROADS BUT NO STORES, WORK BUT NO AMUSEMENTS. LIFE ON SWAN ISLAND CENTERS MOSTLY AROUND THE SEA...
THE JOYCE FAMILY HAS BEEN LIVING AND WORKING HERE SINCE 1806. EIGHT GENERATIONS. AT 75 YEARS YOUNG, CARLTON JOYCE IS THE VETERAN, STILL TOWING THE FAMILY ROPE, A FISHERMAN CHASING THE FAMILY'S PREFERRED CATCH, LOBSTER. THE OCEAN WAS THERE AND THEY FISHED AND THEY DISCOVERED THEY COULD CATCH LOBSTERS. THEY MADE A TRAP, MADE THE TRAPS THEMSELVES.
MADE THEIR OWN TRAPS…I'VE MADE MY OWN TRAPS. DAY IN, DAY OUT, YEAR AFTER YEAR, IT'S HERE, PULLING TRAPS, FILLING BAIT BAGS, CATCHING LOBSTER THAT MAKES LIFE WORTH LIVING. YOU GET OLDER AND YOU DON'T WANT TO GO ANYWHERE ELSE. YOU KNOW THIS IS HOME AND YOU LOVE IT.
AND YOU JUST LOVE BEING ON THE WATER AND SOMETIMES YOU STRUGGLE TO MAKE A LIVING AND SOMETIMES YOU DO ALL RIGHT. IT'S A PASSION HE'S PASSED DOWN. HIS SON JASON IS DRIVING ON WITH THE TRADITION. THE SORT OF THING IS FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE, I GUESS. WE JUST START FISHING AND WE DON'T STOP UNTIL THE FISH THREW YOU IN THE GROUND. AS A FAMILY THEY WERE NEARLY 200 YEARS ON THE WATER PRESERVING THIS RESOURCE IS ALWAYS TOP OF MIND. WE'VE BEEN STEWARDS OF THE RESOURCE A LONG TIME. THERE ARE LAWS THAT GO ON THE BOOKS BACK IN THE EARLY 1800S, LATE 1800S ON HOW TO MANAGE THE RESOURCE. LOBSTER MUST BE A CERTAIN SIZE.
THAT ONE HAS GOOD EGGS ON IT. FEMALES WITH EGGS ARE MARKED AND DROPPED BACK IN THE WATER. COMMON SENSE TELLS YOU IF YOU TAKE THE NEXT GENERATION BEFORE THEY GET A CHANCE TO POPULATE, THEN YOU WON'T HAVE ANYTHING, SO EACH GENERATION, WHEN IT COMES TO LOBSTER FISHING EACH GENERATION HAS LOOKED OUT FOR THE NEXT GENERATION.
TODAY…MAINE LOBSTER MEN AND WOMEN CATCH MORE THAN 120 MILLION POUNDS A YEAR. IT'S ABOUT DOUBLE WHAT IT WAS JUST TEN YEARS AGO. LARGER SUPPLIES HOWEVER ARE PUSHING PRICES DOWN.THAT'S MAKING SURVIVAL FROM FISHING ALONE MORE OF A CHALLENGE. YOU JUST HAVE TO BE CREATIVE AND THINK OF WHERE THERE IS A NEED FOR SOMETHING AND THEN JUST, YOU KNOW WITH A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK AND THE LORD'S BLESSING, WE END UP MAKING IT THROUGH IT…BUT WHAT ABOUT THE NEXT GENERATION OF JOYCE? JASON AND HIS WIFE PRISCILLA HAVE FOUR KIDS, AGES 15-22. HIS SON IS PURSUING A CAREER IN VIDEO PRODUCTION WHICH MEANS IT MAY END UP BEING AMELIA AND HER BOYFRIEND SAM, THE SECOND GENERATION FISHERMEN THAT END UP TENDING THE FAMILY LEGACY. I WENT TO SCHOOL FOR ELECTRICIAN. I TRIED THAT OUT FOR TWO YEARS UP IN PRESQUE ISLE, MAINE. I LIKED IT. I DID.I'M ALWAYS UP FOR LEARNING ANYTHING. BUT LOBSTER IS HIS LIFE. NOW HE'S TRYING TO LEARN ALL HE CAN FROM THESE WEATHERED SEAMEN. LIKE I SAID, JUST BE PATIENT BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO BE SOME ROUGH TIMES. STORMS WILL COME IN ANY PHASE OF LIFE NO MATTER WHAT YOU'RE DOING. FISHING OR FARMING, BOTH THE SAME THING…WHEN THE STORM PASSES, WELL, GET IN THERE AND DIG. FOR “LEAVE A LEGACY,”   I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS REPORTING. JASON IS RAISING A FAMILY AND LOOKS FORWARD TO TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION OF MAINE LOBSTERMEN.LISTEN AS I ASK HIM IF THERE WILL BE A NINTH AND MAYBE EVEN A TENTH GENERATION OF JOYCE ON THESE WATERS HERE IN MAINE. JASON, YOU REPRESENT EIGHT GENERATIONS OF LOBSTER FISHERMEN. IS IT A TRADITION OR IS IT A CAREER? IT'S A CURSE. IT'S A CURSE. TELL ME --NO. I MEAN, IT'S, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU'RE RAISED IN IT AND THAT'S ALL YOU'VE KNOWN, YOU KIND OF, I MEAN IN MY CASE, I KIND OF KNEW WHAT I WANTED TO DO. I MEAN, YOU KIND OF GO TO SCHOOL BUT YOU KNOW IN THE BACK OF YOUR MIND THAT YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU'RE OFF ISLAND FOR A LITTLE WHILE, YOU GET HOMESICK AND YOU LIKE TO COME BACK HERE TO THE PLACE THAT YOU'RE BROUGHT UP IN. I WAS ON THE BOAT AS A LITTLE KID AND STILL HERE, SO- NOW, YOU DO, I MEAN LOBSTER FISHERMEN, YES, BUT YOU HAVE OTHER VENTURES.TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT. OH, WELL, YEAH, I STARTED A TREE SERVICE BUSINESS WITH MY COUSIN. THE PRICE OF LOBSTERS DROPPED BACK IN 2008 SO WE HAD TO SUPPLEMENT OUR INCOME SOMEHOW. AND THERE JUST AREN'T ANY BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES HERE ON THE ISLAND WITH A SMALL YEAR-ROUND POPULATION OF 350. YOU CAN JUST GLEAN SO MUCH FROM THAT, YOU KNOW, SO WE STARTED A TREE SERVICE BUSINESS. WOULD DO THAT IN THE WINTERTIME AND I STARTED TO DEAL IN MARINE L.E.D. LIGHTS I'VE BEEN TESTING ON MY BOAT FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS.
SO, YEAH, WE JUST VENTURE OUT AND STAYING BUSY ALL THE TIME. LIKE IN THE MARINE LIGHTING, I USE IT ON MY BOAT SO I HAVE CONFIDENCE IN IT. I KNOW PEOPLE IN THE COMPANY.
AND THEY STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT AND IT'S A QUALITY PRODUCT.AND THEN WITH THE TREES, IT'S DANGEROUS LIKE FISHING SO I FEEL COMFORTABLE IF I HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO CUT MY LEG OFF. OKAY. OKAY. AND YOU'VE GOT FOUR KIDS? YES. HOW MANY OF THEM WILL FOLLOW YOU AND BE THE NEXT GENERATION? WELL, MY OLDEST, MY SON, HE'S 22. HE'S ALREADY MADE HIS CAREER CHOICE.
HE'S DOING VIDEO PRODUCTION AND HE ENJOYS THAT. ONE THING HE DID GLEAN FROM LOBSTERING IS HE DID LEARN HOW TO WORK SO HE'S GOOD AT IT AND HE HAS A GOOD WORK ETHIC. MY DAUGHTERS, MY OLDEST GIRL, SHE'S GOING TO SCHOOL TO BE A -- SHE'S MAJORING IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION. SHE WANTS TO BE A TEACHER.I DON'T KNOW WHERE SHE'LL WIND UP. AND THEN MY NEXT DAUGHTER, AMELIA, SHE'S IN COLLEGE BUT SHE'S DATING A LOCAL BOY HERE THAT IS FULL TIME LOBSTERMAN AND I -- WE'LL SEE HOW THINGS GO THERE, BUT I'VE GOT AN IDEA SHE'LL PROBABLY BE HANGING AROUND. AND THEN MY YOUNGEST, SHE'S A -- SHE'LL BE A SOPHOMORE IN HIGH SCHOOL.
I'M NOT SURE. I MEAN ALL THE KIDS HAVE GONE WITH ME IN THE BOAT. BUT YOU KNOW, GIRLS TEND TO WANT TO DO DIFFERENT THINGS THAN BOYS DO SO I'M NOT SURE WHAT THEIR CAREER CHOICES WILL BE. BUT YOU SAY AMELIA’S BOYFRIEND A SERIOUS LOBSTERMAN. YEP SO HE MAY AT LEAST PICK UP ON SOME OF THE TRAITS THAT YOU HAVE AND MAYBE FOLLOW YOU A LITTLE BIT, HUH? OH, I THINK SO. HE WAS BROUGHT UP HERE. HE'S A SECOND GENERATION LOBSTERMAN HERE ON THE ISLAND. HIS FAMILY DOES IT SO -- AND HE ENJOYS IT SO HE'S BROUGHT UP ON THE WATER AND I GOT AN IDEA, LIKE I SAID, I MEAN I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE. IF THEY DO END UP GETTING MARRIED GREAT. IF THEY DON'T, THEN I WON'T SHARE ANY SECRETS WITH HIM. IT'S COMFORTING TO KNOW OUR FISHING INDUSTRY IS IN SUCH GOOD HANDS. WHEN WE COME BACK, I'LL QUIZ MICHAEL CULLEN ABOUT FACILITATING THE FAMILY MEETING.
TODAY I WANT TO INTRODUCE MICHAEL CULLEN, A LEGACY CERTIFIED ADVISOR. MICHAEL, WHY DON'T YOU START BY TELLING US JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR CAREER? THANKS, KEVIN. I HAVE SPENT 30 YEARS DOING FINANCIAL PLANNING, HELPING PEOPLE NAVIGATE THE FINANCIAL ROAD MAP OF SUCCESSION AND FINANCIAL SUCCESS. I'M WITH LINCOLN FINANCIAL ADVISORS, A SIPC REGISTERED FIRM AND I'M A REGISTERED INVESTMENT ADVISOR.YOU SAID SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT. YOU SAID YOU HELP PEOPLE. USUALLY WHEN YOU DO THAT, YOU HELP A SINGLE PERSON OR MAYBE A COUPLE. WHEN WE GO INTO SUCCESSION PLANNING, YOU'RE USUALLY WORKING WITH A FAMILY. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FAMILY MEETING AND AN INDIVIDUAL MEETING. IT'S QUITE A BIT DIFFERENT. WHEN YOU'RE IN A FAMILY MEETING, WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT FAMILY SUCCESSION, YOU WANT TO SET THE EXPECTATION EARLY AND YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYBODY IN THE FAMILY KNOWS THEY HAVE A VOICE.THEY MAY NOT BE ACTIVE BUT IT IS THEIR FAMILY BUSINESS.SO ESTABLISHING THOSE ITEMS UP FRONT, LETTING EVERYBODY HAVE A VOICE AND KNOWING THAT YOU MAY HAVE THE NEXT SUCCESSOR WHO IS 15 YEARS OLD SITTING IN THAT MEETING WITH YOU, AND THEIR LEARNING ABOUT THE BUSINESS CAN BE VERY, VERY VALUABLE TO A SUCCESSION PROCESS. BUT THAT'S GOT TO BE A TOUGH DYNAMIC TO NAVIGATE. HOW DO YOU DO THAT? IT CAN BE DIFFICULT. IT CAN BE A VERY EMOTIONAL MEETING. SO I THINK THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT REALLY NEED TO BE DONE UP FRONT TO HELP THE NAVIGATION. AND THOSE REALLY START WITH A REALLY WELL WRITTEN AGENDA FOR THE MEETING SO THAT EVERYBODY UNDERSTANDS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. SETTING UP SOME GROUND RULES YOU KNOW, IF EMOTIONS ARE GETTING HIGH, IT'S OKAY TO TAKE A TIME OUT. WE CAN ALL GO TAKE A COFFEE BREAK AND COME BACK IN A FEW MINUTES WHEN WE'VE ALL CALMED DOWN. AND ACTUALLY, WORKING TO BE RESPECTFUL SO THAT EVERYBODY CAN BE HEARD IN THAT AND THAT GIVING PEOPLE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK AND PEOPLE HAVING AN OPPORTUNITY TO LISTEN CAN BE VERY VALUABLE TO THAT PROCESS. WHEN I DO WORKSHOPS, FOR INSTANCE, I'LL OFTEN HAVE PEOPLE ASK ME DO I NEED A PROFESSIONAL FACILITATOR OR CAN I DO IT MYSELF? HOW DO YOU ADDRESS THAT?
GOSH, I THINK IT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR MOM OR DAD TO FACILITATE THEIR OWN MEETING AND THE REASON IS NOT THAT MOM AND DAD DON'T CARE AND WANT THE BEST THINGS FOR THEIR FAMILY.THE REASON IS THERE ARE SO MANY EMOTIONAL TIES AND THERE ARE SO MANY ABOUT BELIEFS AND UNDERSTANDINGS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE TRUE THAT NEED TO COME OUT IN A FACILITATED PROCESS.NOW, YOU DO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT LIKE IT'S ALMOST ALL EMOTION, AND I UNDERSTAND, MONEY IS VERY EMOTIONAL. WHAT OTHER KIND OF INFORMATION MIGHT BE TRYING TO GET OUT OF THAT FIRST SET OF MEETINGS? WELL, KEVIN, IF YOU DON'T ESTABLISH SOME COMMON GOALS AND OBJECTIVES AMONG THE FAMILY MEMBERS, AND THAT'S NOT JUST MONEY, IT IS AS AN EXAMPLE, A TIE TO THE BUSINESS, THE FACT THAT THE FAMILY NAME IS SUCH A GREAT VALUE TO EVERYBODY AND GREAT PRIDE WITHIN THAT, OR THE FARM LAND AS AN EXAMPLE BEING SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE CARE ABOUT EVEN THOUGH THEY DON'T HAVE ANY INTEREST AT ALL IN THE FARMING ITSELF.THOSE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT NEED TO COME OUT SO THAT WE'RE ESTABLISHING IF YOU WILL, SOME BELIEFS ABOUT THIS BUSINESS THAT WE CAN WORK FORWARD FROM.

JOINING ME NOW IS CARLTON JOYCE AND SAM JOY. CARLTON, WHAT KIND OF COSTS ARE THERE TO THE REGULATIONS THAT ARE OUT THERE? WHAT KIND OF THINGS IS SAM GOING TO SEE OVER HIS CAREER THAT MAY CHANGE THE WAY HE DOES BUSINESS AS A LOBSTER FISHERMAN? I HOPE IT DOESN'T GET ANY WORSE THAN IT ALREADY IS. MAYBE WE'VE REACHED A POINT WHERE THE REGULATIONS ARE SUFFICIENT TO TAKE CARE OF WHAT PROBLEMS WE ENCOUNTER ON THE WATER.
HOPEFULLY THAT IS SO, BUT WHEN I START, WAY BACK, YOU JUST GOT A LICENSE. YOU HAD FREEDOM TO FISH. AND THAT WAS ALL THAT WAS ON YOUR MIND WAS FISHING. SLOWLY, IT CREPT UP ON YOU, YOU HAVE TO DO THIS…YOU HAVE TO DO THAT.
YOU HAVE TO HAVE A LICENSE FOR THIS AND ALL THAT FACTORS IN AND THEN JUST DRAGS YOUR MIND AWAY FROM YOUR EFFORT TO CONCENTRATE ON CATCHING THAT FISH. HE HAS TO DEAL WITH THAT.
I DIDN'T HAVE TO. YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO SO ALL THE REGULATIONS HAVE BEEN ADDED ON TOP OF YOU.
HE'S STEPPING INTO A CAREER AND THIS IS JUST HOW YOU HAVE TO DO IT. THAT'S RIGHT. ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THAT OR IS THAT EVEN -- IS THAT EVEN FOREIGN TO YOU THAT THERE WAS THAT MUCH FREEDOM BEFORE? WELL, I LIKE TO TAKE EVERY DAY AT A TIME, YOU KNOW. I LIKE TO SAY I'M PREPARED FOR IT. YOU KNOW? I'VE GOT A GOOD FAMILY SUPPORT WITH EVERYTHING THAT I EVER DO, SO I THINK, I THINK I MIGHT MAKE IT. I'M SURE HE WILL BECAUSE HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS LIKE FOR ME TO GO WITHOUT ALL OF THIS STUFF ON MY MIND. HE'S JUST BORN INTO REGULATION SYSTEM THAT IS PART OF FISHING. YOU DEAL WITH IT. YOU MOVE ON. AND THAT REGULATION HAS QUITE A COST BEYOND WHEN YOU CAN FISH AND EVERYTHING ELSE.HOW DOES THAT AFFECT THE INDUSTRY OVERALL?WELL, EVERYBODY IN THE STATE OF MAINE HAS TO COMPLY WITH THIS. AND LIKE I SAID, IT'S A FEDERAL ISSUE. SO, THE COST IS THERE. IT'S JUST YOU KNOW, THE BOTTOM LINE, YOUR PROFIT IS THAT MUCH LESS. SAM, DO YOU SEE A TIME IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU'LL BE INVOLVED IN -- I'LL CALL IT INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIONS OR LEGISLATION OR P.R .CAMPAIGNS, THINGS LIKE THAT? I DON'T KNOW.I HOPE NOT, BUT I MIGHT HAVE TO BE, YOU KNOW. I'M NOT A REAL POLITICAL PERSON.
BUT I'M JUST OUT HERE TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING. YOU KNOW, JUST LET US FISH. BUT YOU'RE MAKING A LIVING, YOU'RE DOING A GOOD JOB, YOU KNOW YOU'RE DOING A GOOD JOB AND SOMETIMES SOME OF THESE REGULATIONS, ESPECIALLY THINGS THAT COME DOWN FEEL LIKE THEY'RE ATTACKS. HOW DO YOU SHOW THE PUBLIC, ESPECIALLY THE BUYING PUBLIC, YOUR CUSTOMER, WHAT KIND OF A PERSON YOU REALLY ARE? WELL, DOING A TV SHOW LIKE THIS, I GUESS WOULD BE ONE THING. JUST MAKING A NAME FOR YOURSELF I GUESS, TALKING TO PEOPLE, OTHER PEOPLE THAT DON'T -- YOU KNOW, I WENT TO PRESQUE ISLE AND KID THOUGHT THAT MAINE WASN'T EVEN, HE DIDN'T THINK THAT LOBSTERING WAS A BIG THING IN MAINE. I TOLD HIM ALL ABOUT IT AND TOLD HIM ALL THE STUFF AND HE NEVER REALIZED IT. I DON'T KNOW. SPREADING THE WORD I GUESS. WOULD CONSUMERS APPRECIATE TO SPEND A DAY ON THE BOAT WITH YOU? WOULD THEY LOVE TO SEE HOW YOU TREAT YOUR CROP IF YOU WILL? WHAT WOULD THEY LEARN? THEY WOULD LEARN THAT WE HAVE A SUSTAINABLE FISHERY FOR ONE AND THAT WE DO PARTICIPATE.WE HAVE AN ASSOCIATION IN EFFECT SINCE 1954, STILL GOING STRONG AND THINGS LIKE THAT WE TAKE PART. IN OUR COMMUNITY.
OTHER THAN THAT, WITH THE ZONINGS THAT ARE, 7 ZONES THAT ARE REGULATED FROM THE BEACH OFF, AND WE PARTICIPATE IN THOSE MEETINGS. EXPRESS OURSELVES, PROBLEMS WE HAVE.
YOU DON'T LIKE TO BE INVOLVED IN POLITICS BUT YOU KNOW, IT'S PART OF YOUR LIFE, PART OF YOUR BUSINESS AND YOU HAVE TO.
SO, MIKE, WE STARTED WITH A FAMILY MEETING. HOW DO WE MEASURE SUCCESS IN A FAMILY MEETING? EVERY FAMILY IS DIFFERENT BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS AT THE END OF THE DAY, THAT WE STILL WANT TO HAVE A CLOSE FAMILY, WE WANT TO HAVE A FAMILY THAT CAN STILL ENJOY ONE ANOTHER AND SUCCESS WILL BE MEASURED BY HOW WELL WE'VE COMMUNICATED WITH ONE ANOTHER AND HOW WELL WE'RE STILL GETTING ALONG OR MAYBE EVEN GETTING ALONG BETTER AFTER THIS PROCESS HAS BEEN COMPLETED. SO OTHER THAN JUST TO SAY OBJECTIVE GEE I'M MORE HAPPIERR THAN I WAS, WE GOT SOME STUFF OUT ON THE TABLE, IS THERE MEASURABLE THINGS WE CAN LOOK TO? OH, SURE.THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN MY EYES IS THAT WE STILL HAVE A CLOSE FAMILY. BUT IF OUR PLAN IS TO SEE HOW WE'RE GOING TO GO FROM GENERATION ONE TO GENERATION TWO OR MAYBE GENERATION FOUR TO GENERATION FIVE, DO WE HAVE A REALLY WELL UNDERSTOOD PROCESS BY ALL THE DIFFERENT MEMBERS AND EVERYBODY KNOWS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN AND HOW IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN?
SURE, THINGS WILL COME UP ALONG THE WAY, BUT WE HAVE A WELL DEFINED ROAD MAP TO GET US TO THE DESIRED OUTCOME THAT WE’VE LAID OUT IN OUR PLANNING TOGETHER. NOW, YOU TALK ABOUT A ROAD MAP LIKE IT'S ALMOST FIXED. BUT YOU DON'T REALLY MEAN FIXED. WE CLEARLY DEFINE THE OBJECTIVES, WE WORK TOWARD THEM BUT WE KNOW THERE WILL BE --EVERY PLAN IS DYNAMIC AND WE MAY THINK THAT SOMEBODY IS GOING TO BE OUR HEIR APPARENT AND WHO KNOWS? THERE MAY BE SOMETHING THAT PREVENTS THAT FROM HAPPENING DOWN THE ROAD. WE HAVE TO HAVE FLEXIBILITY BUILT INTO ALL OF THESE PLANS SO THAT WHEN THE UNTHINKABLE THING HAPPENS, WE'VE DONE OUR BEST TO THINK THROUGH WHAT WE CAN DO AND HAVE CONTINGENCY PLANS IN PLACE TO MAKE IT A GOOD SUCCESSION PLAN. SO HOW ABOUT THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT?
WHAT ABOUT A DUSTUP? WHAT ABOUT A PROBLEM? WHAT ABOUT SOME DISSENSION THAT STARTS IN THE FAMILY? HOW DO WE DEAL WITH THAT? AND DO WE DEAL WITH IT IMMEDIATELY? YEAH, THEY'RE GOING TO COME UP.THEY TYPICALLY ARE THERE SOMEWHERE AND IN MY OPINION, I'D MUCH RATHER GET THOSE THINGS OUT EARLY AND GET THEM CLEARLY DEFINED EARLY SO WE CAN DEAL WITH THAT AND TYPICALLY, WHEN WE HAVE THAT INFORMATION THAT COMES UP, WE CAN DEAL WITH IT AND WE CAN PUT THOSE THINGS TO REST SATISFACTORILY AMONG THE FAMILY MEMBERS. BUT IF WE DON'T KNOW ABOUT IT, WE CAN'T ADDRESS IT.AND IS THERE A KEY TO WHO GETS INVITED I BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT ANSWERS TO THAT QUESTION. IT DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU ARE IN THE PROCESS.THE FIRST PART OF IT IS THAT EVERYBODY NEEDS TO BE INVITED. SO YOU KNOW CHILDREN AND THEIR SPOUSES NEED TO COME. EVERYBODY WHO IS PROBABLY ABOVE A CERTAIN AGE… IF WE HAVE KIDS GETTING INTERESTED IN FARMING IN A PARTICULAR FAMILY, MAYBE THAT'S CHILDREN 13 AND OLDER NEED TO BE THERE. MAYBE IT'S KIDS 21 AND OLDER IN ANOTHER FAMILY. SO ALL OF THE FAMILY MEMBERS NEED TO BE THERE.ONCE WE'RE REALLY GETTING INTO THE PLANNING, SUCCESSION PLANNING, THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE WITH THE ACTIVE MEMBERS.
THANK YOU, MICHAEL.
OBVIOUSLY, THERE'S A LOT OF DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MEETING AS A FAMILY AND CONVENING A FAMILY MEETING. UP NEXT, I'LL HAVE SOME CLOSING COMMENTS.
AMERICA'S FOOD PRODUCING CAPABILITIES HAVE NEVER BEEN BETTER. FARMING PRACTICES HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE SUSTAINABLE, BUT THE TRUE VALUE OF OUR INDUSTRY IS THE HEARTS, MINDS AND HANDS OF THE FARMERS, RANCHERS, FISHERMEN AND AGRIBUSINESS OWNERS THAT DOT THE LANDSCAPE. WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ENSURE THE NEXT GENERATION OF FOOD PRODUCING PROFESSIONALS? A COMPREHENSIVE SUCCESSION PLAN IS THE NEXT STEP ON A ROAD TO LASTING SUCCESS. UNTIL NEXT TIME, I'M KEVIN SPAFFORD HELPING YOU TO LEAVE A LEGACY.
