Farmers share their truck and tractor habits
It’s no secret that a lot of farmers and ranchers have a deep sense of loyalty to certain machinery colors and even models. But, which tractor and truck brands are the most popular across farm country? And, what other technology is used in conjunction with their favorite machines?
The Farm Journal Pulse is your place for unbiased responses on these topics and more. Through this text-message poll, you can see how farmers and ranchers feel about a subject and if their opinions are influenced by their geographic location.
Partnering with Commodity Update, the leading provider of agricultural information to mobile phones, Farm Journal sends out a question via text message on the first and third Wednesday of each month. By the next day, results are tallied and displayed on an interactive map.
In late February, more than 2,200 farmers and ranchers shared their favorite farm truck brands. The question asked was: What is the primary truck brand on your farm?
GM (Chevrolet and GMC) received nearly half (44%) of the votes. Ford came in second with 36% of the votes, followed by Dodge/Ram, which received 18%. Toyota, etc., rounded out the vote, each capturing 1% of the responses.
In the tractor cab. When it comes to tractor brands, do you bleed blue, green, red or yellow? More than 2,100 farmers and ranchers shared their primary tractor brand via an early May Farm Journal Pulse. The question was: What is the primary brand of your tractor fleet?
John Deere received nearly 60% of the votes. Case IH came in second with 26% of the votes. New Holland was third with 6%. Massey Ferguson and Challenger each received 2% of the votes and Versatile 1%.
Related to tractors, precision and mobile technology use is definitely increasing across farm country. But just how popular is it? An early July question asked: Do you use your smartphone or tablet inside the tractor cab?
More than half of the 1,300 respondents said yes. Slightly more than 10% voted no, 17% said sometimes, and 19% said they don’t have a smartphone.
