There is a unique set of challenges that comes with year after year of continuous corn production. Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie give his top tips in Corn College TV.
"One thing up front, it’s quite the change in a crop rotation to move to corn on corn," he says. "There are challenges you have to pay attention to."
One is disease, and Ferrie encourages farmers to have good management in place.
Another is nitrogen.
"Farmers must manage what I call the carbon penalty. This requires looking at and revamping the nitrogen program in corn on corn," he says.
The third piece to the corn-on-corn puzzle is stand establishment.
"Farmers need to set up their planter to manage the increased amounts of residue. This could be with coulters, row cleaners or a combination," he says.
