February 2009 Archive for Rubes Cartoons - Tales from a Twisted Mind

RSS By: Leigh Rubin,

A cartoonish look at life...

Please, sir, may I have some more?

Feb 28, 2009

It used to be so easy not to put on weight. I used to be able to eat anything I wanted.Things have not stayed that way. Now I have to be a bit more careful about those seconds or thirds or fourths or (etc, etc., etc.) There must be an easy way to control my appetite, right?

Health food?

Feb 27, 2009

Kinda makes you wonder about the whole “Apple a day” thing, eh?

Something to crow about...

Feb 26, 2009

What do teenagers do best?...Sleep! (Inspired by my oldest son several years ago, who as a teenager was definitely a world class snoozer!)

(Shameless plug alert!...Next Tuesday, March 3  I will be my doing my live cartoony show in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The event is free and open to the public so if you happen to be in the area please feel free to join me for an evening of silliness!)

It begins at 7:00 at The Santa Fe New Mexican (newspaper) Here’s where:

202 E. Marcy Street

Enter through front door

Parking in Otero/Marcy lot

(Hope you all can make it!)

Feb 25, 2009

Today my twenty-one year old son tells me he doesn’t get my cartoon which was published on Tuesday. He shows me the cartoon and I ask him if has ever heard of the song to which the cartoon is referring. He hasn’t. Man, am I getting old or just out of touch… or both?

Seedy humor

Feb 24, 2009

Birds do it. Bees do it. Even educated fleas do it…But what about tomatoes?

I'm down, I'm really down...

Feb 23, 2009

Jeepers…How deep can it get?!

Another reason not to tailgate

Feb 22, 2009

So one day I’m driving along behind a horse trailer and I see the end of a horse normally associated while driving behind (no pun intended) a horse trailer.  It seemed to me that this particular horse had a particularly large backside.   Naturally my mind starts to wander, as it so often does, and I get this fictitious idea for the name of an establishment which would be trailoring such animal.

Not as funny even with a gecko

Feb 21, 2009

Let’s face it, this gag wouldn’t have worked at all if I had switched (the name) to Geico.

Feb 20, 2009

It has been said that holding a grudge only hurts the person holding the grudge. That’s why I say it’s best to let someone else hold it for you. You’ll feel so much better!

A little privacy please!

Feb 19, 2009

A friend of mine has worked for a very BIG corporation for years. Up until very recently he had his own office. Then the BIG corporation had a new building constructed and everybody had to relocate to cubicles…Including my friend. They do not like working in cubicles. I am glad I do not work for a BIG corporation.

The truth may set you free but sometimes honesty can get you in hot water...

Well here I am in Santa Ana, California. What for you ask?  Okay, I’ll tell you. I am here to do two of my live and in person cartoony shows at the Orange Co. Register newspaper. ..It’s true...Honest! Speaking of honesty, (how’s that for a segue?!), just how honest was our sixteenth president? Makes you wonder just how truthful a man can be when presented with a rather difficult question…

The truth hurts...

A pun is a pun is a pun...

Feb 17, 2009

Sometimes a pun is too good to pass up. As you might imagine I, like many of you, receive tons of spam. Many of these ads are promoting “E.D.” products. I guess you could say that this is the one time junk email actually inspired me. I know it’s a dreadful pun, but sometimes I just can’t help myself.

Characters that ended up on the cutting room floor...

Feb 16, 2009

We’re all familiar with the seven dwarves, but how many of you knew about an eighth, somewhat less than politically correct fairy tale character?

Pass the salt and pepper...

Feb 15, 2009

Ah, Sunday morning! Anyone in the mood for some scrambled eggs?

(Wanna see an animated version of this along with some other silly Rubes cartoons? If so, check out the opening credits from the feature film “Moola”
YouTube - Moola opening credits) which was released last year and was directed by none other than Don Most (Ralph Malph) of Happy Days fame!

You want fries with that?

Feb 14, 2009

In response to my post of 2-12-09: Ol James requested a large beef patty… By any chance would a slightly smaller one suffice?

Something to chew on...

Feb 13, 2009

I am all for doing my part for the environment.  When I take my dog for his daily walks I’ll pick up any litter along the way. What really irritates me is the chewing gum I “find” along my route. Would it really be so hard for someone to at least wrap it up in a scrap of paper before spitting it out the car window? Being the problem solving kind of guy I am I believe I have a solution to the problem that has not been proposed before…

Here comes the sun...sort of.

Feb 12, 2009

Thursday is the last day of the World Ag Expo. It’s been fun but I do miss the sun. (Weather here has been cloudy/rainy and chilly…at least by California standards!) I could use a bit more sun…but not too much. I burn easily.

Teaching a young dog new tricks...

Feb 11, 2009

Seems that while I’m away at the World Ag Expo my family is overseeing the house training of the new pooch. (Some people have all the fun!) It was my job to train our big dog and fortunately for me he was a quick study…practically self-taught!

One of those days...

Feb 10, 2009

What a day! I won’t bore you with the details, but I’m exhausted.  Anybody else out there ever feel like this?

Teaching a new dog old tricks...

Feb 09, 2009

We are now the proud owners of a darling, little Aussie Sheppard/Border Collie mix. Lotta energy in that little thing! The “king” of the house, (and whose office I reside most of the time when doing the cartoon thing), is our eight year old Akita mix. He has a wonderful disposition and is very tolerant of the new kid in town. When the big guy was a pup I taught him how to “gently” take a biscuit from mouth. Sure hope the “trick-training” goes a bit easier this time around…

Wet 'n Wild!

Feb 08, 2009

I have never tried placing anyone’s hand in  a bowl of nice, warm water when they are sleeping but I have heard that it can be really fun!...Speaking of fun, today I finish up packing for the World Ag Expo in Tulare, California. If any of you out there are planning on attending this year please come on by and visit me in the Farm Home Arts building. I’ll be in booth # 5116F. I’ll also be doing a (free to the public!) cartoony show on Feb. 11 at the Tulare Historical Society Museum at 7:00PM

Hope to see ya there!

Crossing the Road...

Feb 07, 2009

Okay, so how do I know I’m getting older? (Besides the gray hair, that is!) At least once a day I walk into another room for some reason or another and when I get there I forget why I went in the first place. Getting older sure isn’t for those who are chicken…

Just a little more horsin' around...

Feb 06, 2009

Sometimes I enjoy playing a little game…”How many puns  can I work into a single cartoon.” This one isn’t the most puns I have ever squeezed in, but it’s my favorite...

I'm not a morning person...

Feb 05, 2009

Recently while staying at a nice hotel I was awakened in the wee hours by some upstairs “neighbors” who were having much too good a time.  I’m all for people having a good time, as long as it doesn’t interfere with my sleep. This pretty much sums up my attitude on the subject…

More Horsin' Around...

Feb 04, 2009

Pay yddig! *

*That’s “Giddy yap” backwards

Just horsin' a round

Feb 03, 2009

All in favor of another round say, “Neigh!”

A bowl is a bowl is a bowl?...

Feb 01, 2009

Since I could not find an appropriate football cartoon I thought I’d share another kind of bowl…
