The Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences boasts the largest student body in the country among agriculture colleges. Dr. Mark Hussey, the dean of the college, is extremely proud of this fact, though he’s not satisfied to rest on that.
Hussey has lead a group of academics at Texas A&M through a strategic planning process that outlines the five main focus areas for the college. He explains the work his team is doing and he feels the program is coming together.
- Enhancing food safety and food security
"Each day about a billion people in the world go to be hungry. Our challenge as land grant colleges and the Texas A&M College of Agriculture is to do everything we can to enhance food production worldwide. We have to produce a safe and bountiful food supply for the people of not only this state nation, but also the world."
- Conservation of natural resources
"I don’t think there’s any doubt as you look across the natural resources, that the number one challenge is water. Water quantity and water quality."
- Bioenergy and bioproducts
"As we look to the future, the bioenergy work we’re doing is actually to produce oils and biodiesel from algae and other high biomass products that we can harvest and convert to liquid fuels."
- Public health and nutrition
"We are really trying to increase our focus there. In Texas we talk about one health, plus. It’s that we are what we eat, and it’s that linkage between what we do on the farm or the ranch and working through the entire continuum of products."
- Communities and youth development
"We’re passionate about how do we develop educational programs and then evaluate those programs to ensure we are providing value to the youth of Texas."
