Corn Growers' Common Mistake

July 12, 2013
By: Ellie Murphy, Farm Journal Media Intern
Associate Field Agronomist Missy Bauer explains how to avoid a common herbicide mishap.

Many farmers make the common mistake of applying the wrong herbicide at the wrong grow stage. Farm Journal’s Associate Field Agronomist Missy Bauer points out that, "Sometimes when people are post-applying herbicides to corn, they don’t pay close enough attention to the label restrictions. We always want to make sure we know which grow stage our corn is at and when we’re going to apply that herbicide."

Bauer shows an example of how improper herbicide application can affect yield in Episode 5 of Corn College TV Season 3. She says, "A lot of times we might see in the ear development that it might pinch the number of rows around." As with any product, skipping the label instructions can potentially be a pricey mistake.
