October, November and December are when farmers typically purchase seed, according to a recent Farm Journal Pulse.
Farmers are way ahead of schedule on corn harvest this year. USDA's latest crop progress report shows 26% of the U.S. corn crop has been harvested, which is way ahead of the 9% five-year average.
As farmers close the book on this corn season, they are already planning for next year's corn crop.
This week’s Farm Journal Pulse, a text message poll of farmers and ranchers, asked: When do you plan to purchase your seed corn hybrids for 2013 crop?
Here’s a breakdown of the results:
- September: 17%
- October: 22%
- November: 25%
- December: 21%
- January: 7%
- February: 8%
Based on the results, nearly 85% of next year's corn seed will be bought before the end of 2012.
