Consistent water through the later stages of the growing season is fundamental to attaining the optimal number of kernels per bushel.
"In some of these soils, if the tile line’s still running, I’m at field capacity, I could have anywhere from 10" to 5" of water storage," says Farm Journal field agronomist Ken Ferrie in Corn College TV Season 3, approaching the corn’s hard dough and early dent stages amid the 2012 drought.

"Unfortunately, we’ve got farms that the tile hasn’t run in a year, so they’re below field capacity. That would tell me that I’m going to have to get 2" of rain a week to hang onto this kernel count to make it an 80,000-kernel-count bushel."
