May Milk Production Up 0.8%

June 19, 2013

The United States Department of Agriculture reported this afternoon that May milk production was up 0.8% over last year.

California milk production was actually down 18 million lb. from a year ago, or 0.5%. In contrast, Wisconsin was up 1.2%, New York was up 2.1%, Idaho, was up 0.3% and Pennsylvania, was up 2.3%. Note that Idaho milk production trailed New York’s output by just 2 million lb.

Because of the Federal sequester, the National Agricultural Statistics Service is not surveying dairy farms. As a result, no cow numbers or milk production per cow estimates are available.
