The Cardboard Taste Test

Mar 27, 2011

Last January my wife and I and two of my sons spent a relaxing week on Maui. One night instead of spending a small fortune going out to eat we decided to have a pizza (actually two) delivered to our condo. My wife had a “buy one get the second pizza for half price” coupon from a national chain. After emptying my wallet for several previous meals I thought this would be a great way to save a few bucks. I went to meet the delivery guy in the lobby and was a bit taken aback when he handed me the bill for $54.00 (tip not included) for two lousy pizzas which were average tasting at best. I immediately scrutinized the bill (after my eyes popped back into my head) but it was all legit. Now remember, these were not by any means gourmet “Wolfgang Puck” (lovingly handcrafted and delivered by Wolfgang himself) pizzas. These were your standard run-of-the-mill, chain store variety, cheese, tomato sauce, pepperoni and mushroom disks and paying that much for them didn’t make them taste any better. My oldest son (the business major) suggested the next night that in order to save money (and have more funds available for more of the local brew –see, college really is paying off!) we should just buy frozen store-bought pizzas that were only about seven bucks apiece. I had never had this brand before and too be perfectly honest, while they weren’t bad they were nothing extra special either. If I had to do a blind taste test I’m not sure which one would have won. I guess when it comes to cardboard my tongue isn’t as discerning as my wallet.

It's Raining, It's Pouring

Mar 20, 2011

Okay, it’s been pouring rain for the last couple of days and as much as I don’t mind it I am not fond of bundling up twice a day to take my dog for his morning and evening mile and a half constitutionals. The problem is he won’t let me off the hook. Oh, I can pretend that his intent canine stare isn’t boring a hole in the back of my head. I can pretend to not understand why he softly and continuously whines at precisely the same times every day, heck, I can even pretend to be napping (like I do in order to avoid doing “honey-do’s”...that only works with my wife.) But all that pretending only delays the inevitable. He knows that I know that he knows that I know. In a way he is the ultimate negotiator. I have my position (no walk today-too wet) and he has his position (buck up, pal, a little water isn’t going to kill you). He doesn’t budge an inch on his position. He just keeps staring and whining until I just can’t take it anymore. He knows l’ll eventually give in. Yep, the dog has quite a system. I just hope my wife doesn’t figure it out.

Having the last laugh

Mar 13, 2011

The other day I received a rather uncomplimentary email. (Actually, it was downright rude.) The writer of this email had absolutely nothing nice to say about my cartoons. He said that my cartoons reflect how most newspaper readers these days have a third grade education. He also mentioned that there was nothing funny about personifying animals. He went on and on (and on) attempting to make a point of how I used too many words in a particular cartoon and that demonstrated my lack of talent at getting quickly to the punch line. (I thought it was ironic that he took so long to get to the point.) He also mentioned that he didn’t think it was funny that I drew faces on vegetables. He really had a lot to say and none of it was nice. (Did I mention he said several times how he thought my cartoon wasn’t funny?) Well, it just so happened that evening I had a speaking engagement. The group of people I spoke to were for the most part, retired. This was not a room of uneducated people by any means. They very much enjoyed the “show” and I even received (this is really cool as my wife was there to witness it!) a standing ovation. (Thank you! Thank you very much...I’ll be here all week!)  At the conclusion of my presentation one of the audience members asked if I ever received email from people that don’t like my work. As it so happened I had my Blackberry handy which still had the “love letter” from my non-fan. I only had to read the first few lines before the audience started laughing. I admit it was very satisfying to see almost ninety people laugh at the negative email I received; apparently they did not share his viewpoint. However, I must thank my new “friend” for his contribution to my presentation. In fact, it went over so well I might just make it a regular part of my act.

Reducing my dependence on foreign oil

Mar 06, 2011

Here we go again. There’s unrest in the Middle East (no surprise) and that means higher prices (gouging) at the pump even though there has been no disruption of the flow of oil. It’s kind of ironic that during the big gulf oil blowout/spill/disaster/etc. gas prices didn’t rise. Maybe the oil speculator fellas were just being kind and caring and putting their fellow man ahead (Hahahahahah!) of their need for huge profits (gouging). What, you think I’m being cynical?! Moi?! Hey, I’m all for making a good living and businesses need to profit and all that but golly gee whiz it seems like those oil speculator fellas have us over a barrel (pun intended and it’s probably been said before but there’s nothing wrong with recycling a good pun). Well, I’ll show them! I’ll cut my gas consumption down by starting a carpool... Oh, wait, I work from home. Wow, that was easy. See, I am already reducing my dependence on foreign oil!
