Putting my foot down

May 17, 2010

I can’t tell you how many times when, being  lost in my own thoughts, walking from one part of the house to the next, I just happen to look down at the last minute and have been “miraculously saved” from tripping and/or breaking my neck all because one of my  kids had left something lying around. It wasn’t just the big things that were dangerous either. Little toys like those stray pointy Lego pieces can cause acute discomfort when they come in to contact with bare feet. My wife and I were so cautious about baby proofing our house too. Every cabinet door, electrical outlet and even the brick hearth on the fireplace was childproofed. It must have worked because I can’t remember any of our kids getting injured due to our lack of parental vigilance. (They managed to make up for during the teen years when we weren’t supervising them as closely). Apparently kids don’t generally return the favor. I can’t ever recall them being concerned enough to “adult proof” the house. Fortunately, potential accidents are relatively rare these days with the kids getting older but now we have a new challenge. Our border collie/Aussie Sheppard mix is often the victim of my “big clumsy people feet” after she silently sneaks up next to me and patiently waits for her ball to be thrown. But even that’s not as bad as it used to be. There was a time not too long ago when it was much before she was housebroken.
