Alfalfa Winterkill Takes Toll in Wisconsin

May 10, 2013 03:31 AM

Some dairy producers in Wisconsin are reporting severe alfalfa winterkill, placing even more strain on razor-thin forage supplies.

One producer in Fond du Lac County in eastern Wisconsin reports losing 200 acres, or roughly 40% of her family’s alfalfa acreage.

Many farmers were hoping bare spots and bare fields were simply a sign of a late spring. But closer examination has found dead or dying plants.

Chris Wacek-Driver, a dairy nutritionist with VitaPlus, says the key is to assess fields now and lay out an immediate plan of action for inter-seeding or re-seeding fields. You can find her column here.
