TODAY ON AGDAY

NOVEMBER 20, 2013

STORM RECAP:

GOOD MORNING I'M TRICIA SLOMA IN FOR CLINTON GRIFFITHS. METEOROLOGISTS ARE SCOURING FIELDS AND TOWNS WHERE A SERIES OF POWERFUL STORMS PLOWED THROUGH THE MIDWEST. AND THIS MAY TURN OUT TO BE THE DEADLIEST NOVEMBER EVER FOR TORNADOES. AND THAT'S OUR TOP STORY ON AGDAY.

CROP WATCH:

LET'S CHECK IN NOW WITH METEOROLOGIST MIKE HOFFMAN. HE HAS SOME PHOTOS TO FURTHER ILLUSTRATE THE POWER OF THIS LATE-SEASON STORM. MIKE.

I80 RECAP:

FOR THE PAST EIGHT WEEKS, NATIONAL REPORTER TYNE MORGAN HAS TRAVELED ALONG INTERSTATE 80 - FROM OHIO TO NEBRASKA - TO GUAGE THIS YEARS CORN AND SOYBEAN CROPS. THERE SEEMS TO BE A COMMON THEME - BETTER THAN EXPECTED YIELDS.

CROP PROGRESS:

USDA'S CROP PROGRESS REPORT SHOWS CORN HARVEST IS AT 91-PERCENT. IT'S RUNNING AHEAD OF THE FIVE YEAR AVERAGE. SOYBEAN HARVEST REACHED 95-PERCENT THIS WEEK.
SORGHUM IS 91-PERCENT, FIVE POINTS AHEAD OF AVERAGE. AND PEANUT HARVEST IS AT 97-PERCENT, ALSO FIVE POINTS AHEAD OF AVERAGE.

HAWAII VOTE:

IN AGRIBUSINESS TODAY - A STRIKE AGAINST G-M-O CROPS IN HAWAII. THE KAUAI COUNTY COUNCIL VOTED TO OVERRIDE A VETO OF A BILL THAT WOULD REQUIRE AGRIBUSINESSES FARMS TO DISCLOSE THE PRODUCTION OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROPS AND PESTICIDE USE. THE FIVE-TO-TWO VOTE NOW MEANS THAT THE BILL WILL BECOME LAW AND TAKES EFFECT IN NINE MONTHS. SEVERAL MAJOR SEED COMPANIES HAVE MADE BIG INVESTMENTS IN HAWAII FOR SEED PRODUCTION. IN A STATEMENT TO AGDAY, DUPONT PIONEER SAID - QUOTING NOW - "THE BILL FOCUSES ON A FEW SEED COMPANIES WHILE OVERLOOKING THE VAST NUMBER OF OTHER BUSINESSES ON THE ISLAND THAT USE THE SAME PRODUCTS FOR PEST MANAGEMENT. WE BELIEVE IT TO BE BAD POLICY." LAWSUITS ARE EXPECTED TO BE FILED BY THE SEED MAKERS.

ANALYSIS:

MEANWHILE, WHERE ARE SOYBEAN PRICES HEADED IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. THE MARKET CONTINUES TO FOCUS ON CROP POTENTIAL IN SOUTH AMERICA, NATIONAL REPORTER TYNE MORGAN TAKES A LOOK IN THIS MORNING'S ANALYSIS.

GETTYSBURG:

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE GATHERED YESTERDAY TO MARK THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN'S HISTORIC GETTYSBURG ADDRESS.

CEMETERY RESTORATION:

GARDENERS IN ONE TENNESSEE COMMUNITY ARE HELPING RENOVATE THE FINAL RESTING PLACE FOR SOME OF THE TOWN'S MOST DISTINGUISHED PEOPLE. THE VOLUNTEERS ARE MASTER GARDENERS WITH U-T EXTENSION, AND THEY GIVE THEIR TIME TO PRESERVE A HISTORIC CEMETERY. IN THIS REPORT PROVIDED BY U-T INSTITUTE OF AGRICULTURE, CHUCK DENNEY SHOWS US THE RESULTS OF THEIR MUCH-APPRECIATED HARD WORK.

FOOD CHAIN SURVERY:

HOW MANY FOOD CHAINS CAN YOU NAME OFF THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD? IT'S PROBABLY A LONG LIST. SO WHICH RESTAURANT CHAINS ARE SCORING HIGH ON CONSUMER SURVEYS?
TECHNOMIC IS A FOOD INDUSTRY CONSULTING FIRM. IT JUST CONDUCTED A SURVEY WITH 20-THOUSAND PEOPLE, ASKING THEM ABOUT THEIR MOST RECENT RESTAURANT VISIT.
THEY WERE LOOKING FOR PLACES THAT SCORE HIGH ON VALUE OF FOOD AND BEVERAGE.

HARVEST OF THANKS:

BEFORE WE LEAVE YOU THIS MORNING, WE WANT TO REMIND YOU ABOUT ANOTHER SPECIAL PROGRAM COMING-UP NEXT WEEK. AS WE CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING NEXT THURSDAY, WE WILL BRING YOU OUR ANNUAL TRIBUTE TO AMERICA'S FARMERS AND RANCHERS. WE HOPE YOU AND THE ENTIRE FAMILY JOIN US FOR A "HARVEST OF THANKS".
