TODAY ON AGDAY

OCTOBER 4, 2013

AG EXPORTS:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. TURMOIL IN WASHINGTON IS HOLDING MANY GOVERNMENT REPORTS IN LIMBO--INCLUDING EXPORTS AND TRADE TOTALS. MEANWHILE A NEW REPORT SAYS AGRICULTURE IS CONTINUING TO MAKE UP AN EVER LARGER PORTION OF THE U.S. EXPORT ECONOMY. AND THAT'S OUR TOP STORY ON AGDAY.

DROUGHT MONITOR:

DROUGHT HAS BEEN A STRUGGLE FOR U.S. PRODUCERS THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. THIS WEEK'S DROUGHT MONITOR, HOWEVER SHOWS AN OVERALL IMPROVEMENT IN CONDITIONS.

ARKANSAS HAY:

THIS HAS BEEN A BETTER YEAR FOR MANY CATTLEMEN IN THE SOUTHEAST AS AN ABUNDANCE OF MOISTURE HELPED REJUVENATE THE HAY CROP. NOW THEY'LL HEAD INTO WINTER WITH SUFFICIENT BALES TO FEED THEIR CATTLE. IN THIS REPORT FROM THE ARKANSAS FARM BUREAU, KEN MOORE TAKES US TO POPE COUNTY WHERE RANCHERS SAY THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN FOUR YEARS, THEY'VE BEEN ABLE TO FILL THEIR HAYBARNS.

CROP WATCH:

THERE'S NO SHORTAGE OF MOISTURE THIS WEEK IN PARTS OF THE MIDWEST. MIKE HOFFMAN HAS DETAILS IN CROPWATCH. HELLO MIKE.

BRAZIL HIGHWAY:

IN AGRIBUSINESS TODAY - ONE THING THAT SETS U-S AGRICULTURE APART FROM BRAZILAN COMPETITION IS INFRASTRUCTURE, SUCH AS AMERICA'S STRONGER ROADWAY SYSTEM. BUT THE BRAZILIAN PRESIDENT IS VOWING TO MAKE IMPROVEMENTS.

PROFIT BRIEFING:

IN THE PRO-FARMER PROFIT BRIEFING - BEFORE THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN, USDA RELEASED THE MONTHLY SUPPLY-AND-DEMAND REPORT. AND IT SHOWED HIGHER GRAIN STOCKS THAN MANY ANALYSTS EXPECTED.

MISSOURI EAT SMART:

ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL, CHILDHOOD OBESITY HAS DOUBLED IN THE PAST 30 YEARS. IN MISSOURI EDUCATORS ARE TRYING TO TACKLE THIS PROBLEM HEAD-ON WITH A PROGRAM CALLED EAT SMART. KENT FADDIS WITH UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI EXTENSION HAS MORE ON THE STORY.

FARM RECIPE:

OUR 'FROM THE FARM' RECIPE COULD BE A TASTY MEAL FOR YOUR HARVEST CREW IN THE FIELD. IT'S A STROMBOLI. VIEWER TONYA NICOLE SHARED IT WITH US ON FACEBOOK.
SHE SAYS TAKE A READY-MADE PIZZA CRUST DOUGH, TWO EGGS, ONE TEASPOON EACH OF OREGANO AND PARSLEY. A HALF TEASPOON OF GARLIC POWDER, A QUARTER TEASPOON OF PEPPER, TWO TABLESPOONS OF VEGETABLE OIL, A HALF POUND OF PEPPERONI OR SAUSAGE, AND TWO CUPS MOZZARELLA. PREHEAT OVEN TO 350. SEPARATE EGG WHITES AND YOLKS. ADD THE YOLKS TO YOUR DRY INGREDIENTS AND THE OIL. BEAT WELL AND THEN SPREAD EVENLY OVER YOUR ROLLED-OUT DOUGH. LAYER-ON THE MEAT AND CHEESE AND ROLL-IT-UP. BE SURE TO PINCH THE ENDS TO SEAL IT. BRUSH THE OUTSIDE WITH EGGWHITES. SPRAY YORU BAKING SHEET WITH COOKING SPRAY AND BAKE FOR 25-TO-35 MINUTES. TONYA SAYS YOU CAN ALSO ADD MUSHROOMS.

SUPER OATS:

AND SPEAKING OF GOOD FOOD, SOME SCIENTISTS ARE SAYING OATS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A SUPER FOOD.
