Unifying the Dairy Industry

May 27, 2009

Dear Editor:

The desperation of our farmers can only be equated to the auto workers in Detroit.  At risk is not just our farms but the economic structure within our towns, counties, state and country. Dairy Farmers Working Together has been actively engaged in unifying the industry and balancing our supply and demand to result in stabilizing the dairy price.  On May 7, 2009 in Montpelier on the capitol steps, about 85 supporters attended a Rally for our Future Farmers of this state. We were honored to have featured speakers including Jonathon Mason, State FFA President, a junior at EFHS, and Serena Reynolds, a freshman at BFA St Albans. Heartfelt emotional speeches were delivered that expressed a deep desire to remain in this industry showed the passion of why we do what we do. DFWT has been gathering information since 2006 from other farmers around the country, and overwhelmingly the response has been; supply management.  DFWT has announced support of the Dairy Price Stabilization Program in collaboration with the Holstein Association USA and Milk Producers Council.  DFWT will work to promote this program and to develop it further in a manner that can secure an opportunity for our future farmers to succeed.  Much work will need to be done and we are asking our dairy community to get involved and to help move this along.  A Dairy Crisis Awareness benefit is being held at the Old Lantern in Charlotte on May 29.  Tickets ( are $10 and proceeds are going to DFWT and efforts to make something happen!  Time is of the essence. Please look to for more information.
