Crop Conditions Deteriorate

Apr 26, 2011

Kansas City wheat futures traded higher this morning on declining U.S. HRW wheat conditions and delayed corn plantings, according to traders.

The market was lower overnight on news that China plans to raise interest rates in further attempts to curb inflation, traders said.  The news weighed on commodity markets.

USDA crop progress reports yesterday indicated further declines in the Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas HRW wheat crop.

Corn planting is now estimated at 9% complete compared to 7% a week ago.  Spring wheat planting is also behind schedule, traders said.

Dry Weather Sparks Rally in KC Wheat Futures

Apr 18, 2011

Kansas City wheat futures traded sharply higher today, supported by dry weather in the forecast for U.S. HRW wheat areas and Western Europe, according to traders.

The forecast has turned drier for the U.S. HRW wheat belt this week compared to expectations as of last Friday, traders said.

Dry weather is also in the forecast for France.

Russia may not lift its export ban by July and could continue restrictions beyond that time period, traders said.

Selling interest dried up and nearby months rallied.

Liquidation in KC Wheat Futures

Apr 14, 2011

Kansas City wheat futures traded lower this morning, under pressure from a better chance for rain next week in HRW wheat areas and a storm system moving through the northern tier of Kansas this morning, according to traders.

The continued lower trade prompted liquidation of the long Chicago, short Kansas City wheat spread, traders said.

Poor technical signals also culminated in a weaker morning session.

USDA weekly wheat export sales were within previous expectations, estimated at 443,000 metric tonnes of old crop and 102,000 metric tonnes of new crop wheat.
