What Does This Machine Do? Take Your Guess

Over the weekend a friend sent me this picture and challenged me to name what is does:
So I pass the challenge on to you...
Here are a couple of hints:
- It's the only one of its kind in the U.S.
- It carries the nickname, the Green Monster
- The machine is used in the crop in the picture's background
- The picture was taken in the low country of South Carolina
