November and December Dairy Life Winners

Oct 09, 2011

November: Southwind Dairy, Linda Squire, Hagerman, NM

November

Linda Squire, an owner and calf-raiser at Southwind Dairy, takes pride in raising 2,300 replacement heifers for two dairies at their farm in New Mexico. She writes, "No two days have ever been the same here, and we are constantly faced with new challenges. Almost every morning and every evening, we are treated to an amazing and breathtaking reminder of how lucky we are to be on a dairy farm."

December: Orange Patch Dairy, Shannon Seifert, Sleepy Eye, MN

December

Shannon Seifert and her husband, Jonathan, are the backbone of Orange Patch Dairy. The farm, which includes 170 animals, was started by the young couple in 2005. When Shannon isn’t dairy farming, she is a well-known industry spokesperson online with the farm’s blog, YouTube channel, Facebook page and Twitter account. She fondly refers to their herd as members of the family, including Silver Bells, the calf shown in the photo. "Silver Bells is now a bred heifer that will soon give birth to her first calf, adding another member to our extended family. We love them all, every day." About the photo, Seifert adds, "Their bright eyes are enough to make even the worst day, worst winter day, a blessing."

Pride View Dairy is a fourth-generation farm started in 1939. With each generation that has operated the farm, the farm has slowly grown in size. Today, 700 head call the farm home. Kelly Boelter, the photographer of this winning entry, writes that the fifth generation of the farm, shown in the photo, is learning fast. Shown are Brianna, Brandon and Brady Boelter. Each of these farmers-in-training enjoys working in their own "fields" when they aren’t helping their Dad or uncles around the farm.

Miami Hills Dairy, Laura Frye, Logansport, IN

October

Laura Frye is shown in the photo with her brother, Kevin, and father, Perry. Laura fondly remembers helping her grandparents on their dairy farm before they sold their milking herd in 2003. Because of their passion to continue their involvement in the dairy business, the Frye family continues to raise a small herd of 4-H cows and help Grandpa and Grandma raise replacement heifers. Laura writes, "I believe that it has taught me important life skills such as dedication, commitment and responsibility."

Oct 06, 2011

San Isidro Jerseys, Bernadette Estacio, Turlock, CA

San Isidro Jerseys is a family operation that is home to 1,200 Jerseys. The Estacio family loves that dairy farming allows them to work outside every day and enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature. In reference to her winning photo entry, Bernadette Estacio writes, "Raising our children on the dairy farm is so rewarding. They have learned to raise their own animals, which has taught them responsibility, respect and a work ethic. April's winning entry

Oct 05, 2011

April: Red Rock Ayrshires, Mina Gumieny, Edgar, WI

April

Mina Gumieny and her husband, Rick, met while working together at a feed company, but it was the dairy life that called them home. After working on Rick’s parents’ farm, they decided to buy their own farm, and today operate as a husband-wife team, along with their three children. The farm, Red Rock Ayrshires, located in north-central Wisconsin, is home to 80 registered Holsteins, Ayrshires and Brown Swiss. Mina Gumieny loves that her job allows her to perform many jobs at the same time. It was her role as a mother that allowed her to snap the photo that earned her a place in the Dairy Life Calendar.

"[My son] Wade was helping me unload hay last summer. When we got done, he climbed to the top of the bale rack, looked up at the sky, and took off his hat to catch a cool breeze," she writes in her photo entry. "Then, he put his hat back on and looked down at me and said, ‘Mom, I want to be a farmer when I grow up.’"

Meet the Winners of the Dairy Life Photo Contest

Oct 04, 2011

The entries came from across the country and the selections have been made. We’ve captured exactly what family dairy farming is all about in the 2012 Dairy Life Calendar from Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. This is a calendar your milkhouse or office wall won’t want to be without! To claim your copy of the 2012 Dairy Life Calendar, visit the Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. booth (#2806) at World Dairy Expo or visit www.bidairyphotos.com to have one sent to your farm.

We’ll be introducing you to the winners throughout World Dairy Expo. Here’s more about our winner from January.

January: Western Waves LLC, Hilda Mitchell, DVM, Ferndale, Wash.

January

The photo was taken at the Mitchells’ family farm, Western Waves LLC. Seven hundred fifty Holsteins, Jerseys and crossbreds call the western Washington farm home. One of Hilda Mitchell’s favorite parts of living on a dairy farm is the natural beauty and cow-friendly environment she is surrounded by daily. She enjoys watching calves from her kitchen window. Their excitement at seeing the milk bucket come each morning never ceases to bring a smile to Mitchell’s face.

"Part of the idea behind starting a dairy in one of the more populated areas of Washington was to foster relationships between the dairy and the public, thus connecting the consumer with the cattle-human bond that generations of farm families have enjoyed," she writes. "To me, this photograph captures the essence of that relationship."
