This wasn't the first piece of equipment Dan Weinreis had installed a steering system on, but the operator of feedlot soon realized the benefits of carrying over the technology to harvest. Weinreis runs a feedlot in Nebraska that cycles 19,000 cattle through at a time. With 1,500 acres of silage corn, harvest needs to run efficiently and quickly. 

 

 

He already ran a Trimble AgGPS  EZ-Guide 500 lightbar with EZ-Steer 500 assisted steering system for drilling wheat and grass seed and swapping between his planter tractor and swather. In 2008, he moved it to his John Deere 7500 corn chopper.

 

"We raise all our own corn silage and chop it all ourselves," says Weinreis. "When I steered the chopper myself, it was a stressful job. Getting out of the row resulted in losing some silage. And abrasive stalks would wear out the tire sidewalls prematurely."

 

Weinreis has had the most success with the system since upgrading his signal to RTK. He says the faster signal helps harvest move along quicker.
