TODAY ON AGDAY

OCTOBER 30, 2013

FARM BILL HEARING:

GOOD MORNING I'M TYNE MORGAN IN FOR CLINTON GRIFFITHS. WE ARE TWO MONTHS AWAY FROM 2014, BUT TODAY LAWMAKERS TAKE STEPS TOWARDS ENACTING THE 2013 FARM BILL.

SOUTH DAKOTA LOSSES:

SOME FARMERS ARE FEELING THE EFFECTS OF THE EXPIRED BILL. THE EARLY BLIZZARD IN SOUTH DAKOTA KILLED THOUSANDS OF CATTLE. A FEDERAL DISASTER PROGRAM THAT COULD HAVE HELPED COVER LOSSES HAS LONG-SINCE EXPIRED.

I80 HARVEST MICHIGAN:

AS WE CONTINUE OUR INTERSTATE 80 HARVEST TOUR, WE MAKE A STOP IN MICHIGAN.
WE'VE BEEN HEARING GOOD THINGS FROM FARMERS THERE. YESTERDAY'S CROP RPOGRESS REPORT SHOWED HARVEST IS AT 31 PERCENT COMPLETE, THAT'S 10 POINTS BEHIND AVERAGE. YIELDS, ON THE OTHER HAND, AREN'T LAGGING. IN FACT, THEY'RE PRETTY GOOD.

ARKANSAS SOYBEANS:

COMING UP TOMORROW WE'LL HEAR ABOUT THE BIG BEAN SUCCESS IN ARKANSAS.
FARMERS HAVE BEEN WORKING FOR YEARS TO BREAK 'TRIPLE DIGITS'. THIS YEAR IT HAPPENED...AND MORE THAN ONCE.

CROP WATCH:

LET'S HEAD OVER NOW TO THE AGDAY WEATHER-CENTER FOR CROPWATCH. HERE'S MIKE HOFFMAN. MORNING MIKE.

MOSAIC PHOSPHATE:

IN AGRIBUSINESS TODAY THE MOSAIC COMPANY SAYS IT PLANS TO BUY A FLORIDA-BASED PHOSPHATE OPERATION FROM C-F INDUSTRIES. THE DEAL IS WORTH OVER A BILLION DOLLARS. THE MINNESOTA-BASED COMPANY WOULD AQUIRE A 22-THOUSAND ACRE PHOSPHATE MINE AND A MANUFACTURING PLANT IN CENTRAL FLORIDA AND A TERMINAL IN TAMPA. PHOSPATE IS A KEY INGREDIENT IN FERTILIZER. MOSAIC PRODUCES ABOUT EIGHT MILLION TONNES OF PHOSPHATE ANNUALLY. THIS WOULD INCREASE PRODUCTION BY NEARLY TWO MILLION TONNES.

ANALYSIS:

IN OTHER NEWS - THE FEDERAL RESERVE IS MEETING THIS WEEK. TRADERS WANT TO KNOW IF THE BOARD WILL CHANGE ITS CURRENT POSITION ON BOND PURCHASES TO SHORE-UP THE ECONOMY. FARM DIRECTOR AL PELL HAS MORE IN ANALYSIS.

BEEF CHECKOFF:

ALTHOUGH BEEF PRODUCERS MAY KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT THE WORK THE BEEF CHECKOFF PROGRAM DOES TO BUILD BEEF DEMAND, THERE ARE STILL MANY WHO MAY NOT SEE HOW CHECKOFF PROGRAMS IMPACT THEIR LIVELIHOOD. ONE YOUNG LEADER IN THE BEEF INDUSTRY IS CONVINCED OF THE VALUE THE BEEF CHECKOFF HAS TO THE FUTURE OF HER RANCH. BRIAN BAXTER HAS DETAILS IN THIS VIDEO PROVIDED BY THE BEEF CHECKOFF.

PEANUT CORPORATION:

THE FORMER C-E-O OF THE PEANUT CORPORATION OF AMERICA APPARENTLY WANTS TO USE HIS A-D-H-D AS A DEFENSE IN HIS UPCOMING TRIAL OVER A SALMONELLA OUTBREAK.

DOLLAR GENERAL:

AND FINALLY THIS MORNING - IT APPEARS THOSE "ONE-BUCK" SHOPS ARE READY TO BATTLE AGAINST THE BIG BOX STORES.
