Some 259,000 dairy cows were slaughtered in federally inspected plants in September, the United States Department of Agriculture reported Thursday.
That’s 8,000 more than a year ago (+3.2%), but 7,000 fewer than in August. However, on a per day basis, dairy farmers sent 12,950 cows to hamburger nirvana in September compared to 12,090 in August.
Year-to-date, 2,342,000 dairy cows have been slaughtered. That’s 54,000 more than a year ago, or 2.4%.
