Fighting Cancer With Pink Pumpkins

Efforts to gain attention for breast cancer research have included pink ribbons, pink hats and famous buildings bathed in pink light.  Now America's pumpkin growers are getting in on the act with pink pumpkins.

The effort got its first steps last year according to Don Wertman, chief operating officer of Seedway Seeds and board member of the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation. "We found a pumpkin that throws a pink fruit, and it just was a natural to utilize for this cause," Wertman said in an exclusive interview with AgriTalk Radio host Mike Adams.

And so the Pink Pumpkin Patch sprouted, raising $30,000 in its first year, a drought year tough on pumpkin production.

Wertman hopes for bigger and better production in 2013, as he aims for "a pink pumpkin on every porch."  To grow the effort this year, the foundation is teaming up with FFA, offering free pink pumpkin seeds to FFA chapters with the promise that they will return 50 percent of profits to the Pink Pumpkin Patch charities.  The foundation will provide growing instructions and marketing support as well as 5 thousand free seeds to each chapter that participates. The seeds are also available to commercial growers who in turn donate a portion of profits back to the Pink Pumpkin Patch.

Funds are distributed to charities that support breast cancer research at the direction of the Pink Pumpkin Patch foundation board which is made up of pumpkin growers, seed dealers and a breast cancer survivor.  For more about the pink pumpkins visit www.pinkpumpkinpatch.org.
