Two new options for trucks are set to hit the market. Ram Trucks announced the new additions to their line-up this week at the Chicago Auto Show.

Ram Heavy Duty 3500The show-stealer of the pair is the Ram Heavy Duty 3500. This monster truck was built for hard work and big jobs.

Fred Diaz, president and CEO for the Ram Truck Brand, says this truck is full of wow factors, which include:
  • Cummins Turbo Diesel now rated at 800 lb.-ft. of torque, a 23% increase
  • Gross Combined Weight Rating increased to 30,000 lbs.
  • 22,700-lb. maximum trailer tow weight leads the segment

Diaz also says Ram is the only heavy-duty pickup that doesn’t require diesel exhaust fluid.

Diaz says towing capability was the key feature they wanted to really excel. “This kind of power is unsurpassed.”

The Specs

The 6.7-liter, six-cylinder Cummins Turbo Diesel can reach peak torque at 1,600 rpm and exceeds the previous model’s output from 1,200 through 2,800 rpm. Horsepower is also higher from 1,200 through 2,800 rpm, although maximum horsepower remains 350 at 3,000 rpm.

Ram has the largest brakes of any heavy-duty pickup; 14.17 inch x 1.54 inch front and 14.09 inch x 1.34 inch rear with an integrated anti-lock brake system (ABS) that increases brake life and braking stability.

Truck for the Workplace

The other trim package introduced was the Ram Tradesman. This smaller machine is priced and equipped to be more of an entry-level truck

Ram TradesmanDiaz says the Tradesman was specifically designed for construction, farmers, small businessmen and commercial fleets. “This is a hard working truck for hard working people.”

The Specs

The Ram Tradesman starts with the Ram 1500 ST trim package and adds features such as a standard HEMI® engine with five-speed automatic transmission, which balances power with fuel efficiency. HEMI-equipped Ram 1500s are rated at 390 horsepower (291kW) and 407 ft.-lb. torque and 20 mpg highway.

Also included in the Tradesman package is a standard Class IV trailer hitch with lighted, above-bumper four- and seven-pin trailer wire connectors. Tradesman also features heavy-duty engine cooling and a heavy-duty transmission oil cooler. Properly equipped Tradesman models can tow 10,450 lbs.

The truck is available in either regular cab short-bed (6 foot, 4 inch) and long-bed (8 foot) models, with a choice of 4x2 or 4x4 powertrains. For the inside, buyers can choose vinyl or cloth seats.

The 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 Tradesman price starts at $22,780 and will go on sale in the second quarter 2011.
