Accuracy is a must-have for any yield monitor. Doug Sauder, project manager for Precision Planting, says his company’s latest offering, YieldSense, will bring one of the most accurate yield monitors to the market without constant calibration.

"It changes the way grain flow is measured, with a sensor and paddle that eliminate the variations of current yield monitor technology," he says.

Current systems tend to over-report yield at low-flow rates and under-report yield at high-flow rates, Sauder explains. The good news is that the incidences of over- and under-reporting tend to balance out over time. The bad news is that those inaccuracies can be detrimental when mapping out a variable-rate strategy. Testing by Precision Planting  shows that reported field totals from current systems are within a few percent of elevator measurement but can be off by 4% or more on about half of individual loads.

"That’s not good enough to make critical decisions about hybrids and yield management zones," he says.

YieldSense works with the 20/20 SeedSense monitor and is compatible with John Deere 50, 60, 70 and S Series combines. The yield monitor comes with a new flow sensor, elevator chain and paddle. It requires  a CAN-based moisture sensor to operate. Visit www.precision planting.com for more information about the yield monitor.
