Raise Your Profits From the Seat of Your Tractor

Streamline how you farm in order to maximize yields.

"It's been a challenging year, but you've got to keep at it if you can," says Chris Barron, Iowa farmer and AgWeb margins expert.

With wet weather in much of the Midwest delaying or preventing planting this spring, it's probably safe to say that most farmers would agree.

"There's a time to drive the tractor and a time to drive the computer, and I think right now's the time—if you're in an area that's dry enough—to keep the tractors moving," Barron says.

However, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't still be thinking about your profit margins, and one of the best ways to do that from your tractor is to focus on maximizing yields. In short, pinpoint which fields are worth your time, Barron says.

"Really thinking about prioritizing your operations at this time of year can pay off big," Barron says.

This is especially true given the market volatility producers will likely be facing this year.

"The market's going to have a mind of its own and it's going to be very, very dependant upon what the weather does," Barron says.
