Yields Tick Up as Harvest Advances

October 10, 2013
By: Sara Schafer, Farm Journal Media Business and Crops Editor

More than 300 corn and soybean farmers have reported yields for the 2013 crops. See where yields are high and not-so high.

While the federal government may not be reporting harvest data, farmers are. It is clear from reports to AgWeb Crop Comments and AgWeb’s Corn Harvest Map and Soybean Harvest Map that harvest is in full swing in many states.

According to more than 240 yield reports to AgWeb’s Corn Harvest Map, the average yield from all the submitted yield reports (not weighted by associated acres) is hovering right around 165 bu./acre. These reports encompass more than 101,000 acres.

USDA’s last report, for September, pegged the national corn yield average at 155.3 bu./acre.

When state-by-state yields are weighted by each state’s harvested acre total (leaving yields at USDA’s Sept. 1 estimate for states with no yields reported), the average yield to date is 149.6 bu. per acre, resulting in a crop of 13.332 billion bushels.

Though the national yield appears to be coming in above previous estimates, farmer-reported yields very greatly, ranging from 20 bu./acre to more than 300 bu./acre. So far, the highest corn yield, 333 bu./acre, is from Richland County, Ill.. Other high yields are coming in from Arkansas, Idaho, California and Nebraska. The lowest yields reported so far are from Kansas, Indiana and South Dakota.

Fewer farmers, only 70, have submitted soybean yield reports so far. The reports cover nearly 15,000 acres, to AgWeb’s Soybean Harvest Map. The current average yield from those reports is 48 bu./acre, which is above the last USDA yield estimate of 41.2 bu./acre.

The highest yield report, 83 bu./acre, is from Fauquier County, Va. Several yield reports of 60 bu./acre or higher have come in from Iowa, Indiana, Illinois and Louisiana.

USDA’s October reports will not be released Oct. 11, due to the government shutdown.
