VIDEO: Case IH Gives Combine Tips

 Case IH combine expert Terry Snack provides the following tips and tricks to minimize harvest losses. He also details the "Agronomic Design" of the Case IH Axial Flow combines and 4000 Series corn heads.

He says that 60% of harvest losses come from the corn head. A key is reduce ear drop—1 or 2 fallen ears translates to 2 to 3 bu./acre losses. And dropped loose kernels are not only lost income potential but also can lead to volunteer issues.

When machine losses are being identified, it can be easy to identify where those losses occur: kernels left on the cob are threshing losses and kernels on the ground are separating losses.

University and industry experts have established that acceptable levels of harvest loss are 1% of total yield.

AGCO Puts Challenger in the Spotlight

 In the company’s third quarter investor call this morning, AGCO officials cited the Challenger brand as the leading contributor to an increase in sales for North America.

They said sales were strongest in the row crop segment, with the most significant increases in high horsepower tractors, sprayers and implements. 

And Challenger sales are up 7% year-to-date compared with 2012.

"That is the main source of improvement that we’re seeing in North America is through the Challenger branded products and the Challenger dealers," said Andy Beck, AGCO’s  Chief Financial Officer, Chief Accounting Officer and Senior Vice President.

He continued and gave credit to the distribution network

"As you know, a lot of those Challenger dealers are Caterpillar dealers, and we're seeing significant investments by those dealers to further position themselves in the ag sector and things are going quite well in that regard," Beck said.

And then Martin Richenhagen, AGCO’s  Chief Executive Officer and President named perhaps the three top CAT dealers leading the charge, "There you can see very strong companies, like Butler, Altorfer and Ziegler, investing more in our business, and that helped us basically take hold of the Challenger business in the U.S."

Overall in North America, net sales grew 8.9% in AGCO’s North American region during the first nine months of 2013 compared to 2012, excluding the negative impact of currency translation. 

How an English Major Runs an Auto Shop

 I found this story about Sarah Kennedy taking over her dad’s auto repair shop a great read. It’s from a magazine (Ratchet + Wrench) that covers the auto care industry, but I think there are some great lessons for agriculture, particularly how good communication practices can help any business run better:

In the context of machinery repair and service,

                "A lot of what a customer mistakes as bad car repair is simply poor communication"

                "We’re in a relationship-based business"

In the context as a farm manager communicating with employees,

                They have standard meetings and times to communicate "Every Monday mornig we have a check-in meeting first thing in the morning."

                The team credits success with their supplier partners "After several years of having great communication between our customers, our parts suppliers, our technicians, and the owners, it really is an exception when something gets screwed up and we don’t know how it happened."

A Massey Ferguson with a Cause

 Amber Schneider turn her great-grandfather’s Massey Ferguson 35 into a fundraising mascot.

The tractor had been used in the family’s California vineyard, but since its retirement from farm work it has found a new purpose. Schneider, with the help of two friends, gave the tractor a new paint job and a starring role at the community’s Relay for Life event.

When the event began in Kerman in 2011, the goal was $24,000, but the town raised $60,000. This year, the event raised more than $85,000.

 You may have missed these headlines, but both will lead to more iron for your eyeballs, dealer lots and your fields.

The reality of high-speed planting is emphasized as Vaderstad has acquired Seed Hawk with the intention to spread its Tempo planter south of the Canadian border and bring 12 mph planting passes to the U.S. Read more here. 

It’s been the buzz of how and when Kubota will increase its footprint beyond tractors. With the purchase of Kverneland, Kubota now brings its own line of hay tools to the market. We’ll have to wait and see if the tillage line is next… or something else? Read more here. 

Lighting Up Harvest

 A Minnesota artist is illuminating the hard work of harvest with an art installation of a combine with its glass replaced by back lit stained glass. A work by stained glass artist Karl Unnasch, the combine is parked along a rural highway as part of the Farm/Art Dtour 2013.

The panels are located in the window frames and also on the header and machine’s body.

Cabela’s Selling Tractors

 This fall, seven locations of Cabela’s stores started carrying its own line of utility tractors. This is part of the company’s Wildlife and Land Management program, which aims to help customers with everything from the products they need for their land and food plots to consulting with wildlife biologists.

There are three horsepower ranges: 35 hp, 43 hp, and 50 hp. The two higher horsepower platforms can be outfitted with a cab.

The company will not name the manufacturer of the private branded tractors, except that they are produced at a state-of-the-art facility in South Korea, but to me, they look like this.

The tractors were introduced in early August in the test markets of Sidney, Neb.; Allen and Fort Worth, Texas; Rogers, Ark.; Gonzales, La.; East Hartford, Conn.; and Rogers, Minn. All of these locations already have a full shop for their marine/boat service, and Cabela’s has associates at the service centers who have received specific training on the tractor lineup. In 2014, the company plans to increase the number of stores offering the tractors. 

The company sells attachments for its tractors, which are manufactured by Woods.

Cabela’s started selling ATVs and utility vehicles in 2006.
