Flooding Impacts Utah Dairies

June 20, 2011

Melting winter snow pack and heavy rain is causing problems for Utah dairy producers in the Ogden area, reports the Ogden Standard-Examiner.

Ron Gibson, who milks 1,500 cows and farms 1,200 acres, has about 400 acres of land underwater. Gibson is a fifth-generation Utah dairy producer, with the land homesteaded in 1869. That long family legacy puts added pressure on him not to lose what previous generations of his family built.

He takes encouragement from his father, who faced similar flooding in the 1980s. Gibson is a former 2010 Dairy Today Dollars and Sense contributor.
