Consultant Provides Initial U.S. Crop Estimates

May 22, 2012
By: Julianne Johnston, Pro Farmer Digital Managing Editor

Crop consultant Dr. Michael Cordonnier says the corn and soybean crops in the U.S. are off to a strong start, but will need a rain soon to recharge soil moisture. He estimates planted corn acreage at 96.4 million and harvested acreage at 89.5 million. For soybeans, he sees an increase in double-crop acres compared to USDA's March estimate, although says final acreage will depend on soil moisture after the wheat crop is harvested. He estimates planted soybean acreage at 76.0 million and harvested acreage at 75.0 million.
