Canada: The Bank of Canada is seen holding rates steady, though it may take a softer tone.
China: Fourth-quarter GDP is reported.

Wednesday, Jan. 18
Volcker rule:
Subcommittee joint hearing. House Financial Services – Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit. A joint hearing on the potential impact of the proposed Volcker Rule, a provision in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act that prohibits banks from investing in hedge funds and private equity funds. Witnesses include Margin Gruenberg, acting chairman, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation; Gary Gensler, chairman, Commodity Futures Trading Commission; Mary Schapiro, chairwoman, Securities and Exchange Commission; Daniel Tarullo, member, Board of Governors, Federal Reserve System; and John Walsh acting comptroller of the currency.
US energy outlook:
The US Energy Association, which represents the interests of the energy sector, holds its "state of the industry" forum in Washington. Speakers include representatives of the oil and gas, electricity, coal and nuclear power sectors.
Mayors hold winter forum:
The US Conference of Mayors stages its Winter Meeting in Washington (until January 20).
Animal feeding:
USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service advisory committee meeting. Codex Alimentarius Commission: Meeting of the Ad hoc Intergovernmental Codex Task Force on Animal Feeding.

Deadline for Italian banks to present recapitalization plans to Bank of Italy.
EU:
Banks in the European Union face a deadline to submit plans to meet the European Banking Authority’s new capital requirements.
Greece and Ireland:
Talks over Greek debt are seen ending, while Ireland's lenders issue a quarterly review of the bailout.
