Developing a strong farming enterprise doesn't always mean adding acreage. It sometimes includes a healthy dose of looking at the current operation and improving internal efficiencies.

Pat Duncanson, from Mapleton, Minn., was a featured speaker at today's Top Producer Young Farmer Program. Duncanson is also a 2009 finalist for the Top Producer of the Year.

A deciding factor to the farm's growth in the late 1980s and early 1990s was taking a hard look at the farm's infrastructure to determine where they could farm more profitably and efficiently. "We decided to improve within rather than increase the number of acres,” Duncanson says. "That was key in helping our farm improve.”
