The National Dairy Shrine announces the winners of their scholarships for 2010. The scholarships will be presented at the Awards Banquet at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin on Thursday September 30th. National Dairy Shrine will provide more than $40,000 of scholarship awards to students at that event.
NDS Student Recognition Awards
The NDS student recognition program recognizes graduating seniors planning a career related to the dairy industry who have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, academic ability, and a sincere interest in dairy cattle. Each university is allowed to nominate up to two candidates for this recognition in any given year. The highest winner receives a $2000 award, the second a $1500 award and the other winners receive $1000 awards.
The top awardee is Elizabeth Smith Ziegler from Lebanon, Pennsylvania. She has been very active in many dairy related activities at Penn State and was the high individual at the National Intercollegiate Judging Contest in 2008. The second award goes to Janelle Hartzell Hoffman of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. She is Animal Science major at Penn State University who has been very active in the ADSA Student Affiliate organization.
Next is Londa Johnson from LaCresent, Minnesota. She is a Dairy Science student at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls. Following next is Ashley Sprengeler from Plato, Minnesota. She is majoring in Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Next is Kaleena Westaby from Stockton, Illinois. She is a Dairy Science major at Iowa State University. Next is Jessica Achen from Sauk Centre, Minnesota. She is an Animal Science major at University of Minnesota. The next awardee is Lydia Hardie from Blair, Wisconsin. She is a Dairy Science major at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Following is Charles Schiller from Freeport, Minnesota. He is an Animal Science major form the University of Minnesota. The final recognition awardee is Sandra Kirchner from Clintonville, Wisconsin. She is a Dairy Science major from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls.
Kildee Scholarship Awards
Receiving the Kildee Graduate Studies Scholarships are Janelle Hartzell Hoffman of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania and Robyn Bechtel of Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. Janelle completed her degree in Animal Science with a minor in Agribusiness Management at Penn State University this spring. Janelle will be entering Veterinary School this fall and would like to return to private practice in Pennsylvania. She is committed to offering her help and advice to help dairymen of the future. Robyn Bechtel completed her degree in Animal Sciences at Penn State University this spring. Robyn plans to continue her education at Penn State in a Master’s program for Agricultural and Extension Education. She is committed to redesigning dairy and livestock curriculum for high school students.
Paula Craun of Bridgewater, Virginia, has been selected as the 2010 recipient of the Kildee Undergraduate Studies Scholarship. She is currently a senior at the Virginia Tech, majoring in Agricultural and Applied Economics. Her goal is to become a certified financial planner for the dairy industry.
NDS/DMI Milk Marketing Scholarships
Elizabeth Olson, of Hutchinson, Minnesota has been awarded the 2010 National Dairy Shrine /DMI Milk Marketing $1,500 Scholarship. Additionally, seven other undergraduate students have been awarded $1,000 scholarships and are listed alphabetically. These generous scholarships are made possible by Dairy Management Inc. and NDS to encourage students to pursue careers in dairy product marketing.
Elizabeth Olson is double majoring in Animal Science and Applied Economics at the University of Elizabeth is the current Princess Kay of the Milky Way for the state of Minnesota. Ariel Garland, of Greenfield, Massachusetts, is a Dairy Management student at SUNY – Cobleskill. Ashley Julka of Rosendale, Wisconsin is majoring in Agricultural Marketing Communications at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls. Caitlin Kasper of Owatonna, Minnesota is majoring in Agricultural Education and Spanish at the University of Minnesota. Carissa Levash of Brillion, Wisconsin is a Dairy Science major (business emphasis) at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Curtis Horsens of Cecil, Wisconsin is studying Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Danielle Brown of Dodgeville, Wisconsin is a Dairy Science and Life Sciences Communication major at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Sandra Stewart from Cranston, Rhode Island is a culinary Nutrition major at Johnson & Wales University.
Each year, two scholarships are awarded by National Dairy Shrine in memory of Dr. Marshall E. McCullough, the well-respected nutrition researcher and educator from Georgia. Eligible students must be entering their freshmen year of college and plan to major in dairy/animal science or agricultural journalism with a dairy emphasis. National Dairy Shrine is pleased to announce the 2010 McCullough Scholarship Winners – Nancy Jackson of New Cambria, Missouri and Stephanie Kasper of Owatonna, Minnesota.
Nancy Jackson will receive the $2500 top scholarship to be used towards her continued education at the University of Missouri – Columbia in an Animal Science and Agribusiness management major.
Stephanie Kasper will receive a $1000 scholarship to be used towards her pursuit of an Agricultural Communications and Marketing degree at the University of Minnesota.
Maurice Core Scholarship
Jacob Achen of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, has won the Maurice Core Scholarship. This $1,000 award is given in honor of Maurice Core, the long-time Executive Secretary of the American Jersey Cattle Association, and, more recently, the Executive Director of the National Dairy Shrine. The funds for this award were donated by the friends of Maurice Core. The Core Scholarship is given to a freshman status student working toward a degree in dairy or animal science.
Jacob is an outstanding student, has shown very strong leadership abilities and has been involved in 4-H, FFA, Junior Holstein Association and Junior Milking Shorthorn Association activities. He is a student at the University of Minnesota.
The Iager Scholarship for $1000 is awarded annually to a second year student in a two year agricultural school to pursue a career in the dairy industry. It is based on academic standing, leadership ability, interest in the dairy industry and plans for the future. This scholarship was started by a generous donation from the Charles and Judy Iager family of Fulton, Maryland.
The recipient this year is Casey Arlig of Friendship, New York. She is attending SUNY Cobleskill and majoring in Dairy Production and Management and plans to become an Agricultural Extension Agent after college. .
Klussendorf/McKown Scholarship Winners
Danielle Brown of Dodgeville, Wisconsin, Kelly Lee of Johnson Creek, Wisconsin, Brittany Thompson of Snow Camp, North Carolina and Michelle Funk of Jeromesville, Ohio have been named the 2010 Dairy Shrine - Klussendorf Association Scholarship Award winners. These $2,000 scholarships are awarded by the National Dairy Shrine and funded by the Klussendorf Association. They were made possible by generous gifts by the late Klussendorf member, Chris Kampf, and gifts from fund raisers by the Klussendorf Association.
The Robert McKown Scholarship winners receive a $2000 scholarship in honor of” Whitey” McKown a long time supporter of the Holstein breed and National Dairy Cattle Shows. These scholarships are made possible by generous donations from the friends of Robert “Whitey” McKown. This year’s winners are Christy Hindman of Brockway, Pennsylvania and Caitlin Patrick of Woodbine, Maryland.
