Top Producer of the Year: Olsen Custom Farms Tour Diary

August 4, 2008
By: Sara Schafer, Farm Journal Media Business and Crops Editor

Chad Olsen of Olsen Custom Farms won Top Producer of the Year in 2007. Below are some of their comments from their Olsen Custom Farms Diary.

8/01/08 Another 100 degree day
Good morning.  To get right to it, Scott said they had another good day near Billings, MT yesterday.  The weather this morning is good so it looks like another good day of cutting ahead there.

In Pierre, it's supposed to be 100 degrees today.  They are in the fields this morning just working on some equipment.  They should be cutting sometime shortly.  Weather permitting, Chad is thinking they could be done there by Monday.

Have a great weekend!

7/31/08 Keep on cutting!
Good morning.  I talked to Corey this morning and he said they had a good, long day of cutting in Pierre yesterday.  It looks to be the same today as it's hot and windy there.  I think there's an end in sight in Pierre.

I also talked to Scott in Montana and they cut about about 500 acres with just two combines yesterday.  He said the cutting is going well but he's anxious for more machines to start showing up there!  As I mentioned yesterday, the next few days are going to be very hectic trying to finish up jobs and start new ones.  We'll have more machines headed to Montana ASAP!

On a personal note, two of Chad and Pam's daughters, Josie and Claire, are showing their horses at a local fair this morning.  Hopefully they bring home a couple ribbons!

Also, my son Taylor and my dad Alden are on the wagon train with a team of horses and a covered wagon heading from Pierre, SD to Deadwood, SD.  I talked to them this morning and they had a fun day and a good day of travel yesterday.

Talk to you soon!

7/28/08 Cutting resumes
The crews started cutting again around 4:00.  There's a chance for some rain out there again tonight!  Ugh!

We got about an inch here at home on Saturday night/Sunday morning which was very welcome!   It looks like we have a chance for more tonight but I hope it doesn't come with a storm!

We had some combines from some other locations delivered to Montana to begin cutting there.  Scott, Tanner, AJ, Philip and Casper V are heading there right now so hopefully they start cutting as soon as tomorrow in Montana.

Talk to you in the morning!

7/30/08 Knock on wood
Good morning.  Knock on wood, the weather has been good lately in Pierre for cutting and the forecast looks good as well.  They cut all day yesterday and took out another couple thousand acres.

I talked to Scott this morning as well in Montana and he said they started cutting there late yesterday.  He said the weather was hot and dry this morning so he expects to be in the field fairly soon as well.

Things are getting a little hectic as the wheat is ready to cut all over the place now it seems!  Somehow, everything will work out and I know we'll do our best to accommodate everyone.

Have a great day (even if you don't get to golf later!)

7/29/08 Dodging the storms
Good morning.  We missed the storm here at home last night and it also missed Pierre!  I talked to my brother Corey who is in Pierre for the week combining, and he said the weather was nice so far today!

They only cut until about 8:30 or so last night and then the moisture was just too high.

We'll keep on plugging away!

7/28/08 A good cutting weekend
Good morning.  Amanda is back in the office today as she was gone all last week cutting in Pierrre.  She's in the Pierre photo gallery next to her combine that she ran all last week.

I was able to stop by Pierre on Friday and then again late yesterday.  They were cutting like mad!  Friday was actually pretty damp and combines were being pulled out right and left!  Yesterday, they didn't get started until about 3:00 or so but they cut until about 10:30 or so.  I haven't talked to anyone in Pierre yet this morning so I'll let you know later what is going on today!
