Crop Progress: 39% of Corn Harvested, 63% of Soybeans

October 21, 2013
By: Sara Schafer, Farm Journal Media Business and Crops Editor

After a three-week hiatus, USDA returned Monday with its weekly Crop Progress and Condition Rating reports.

As of Oct. 20, USDA estimates 94% of the corn crop is mature and 39% of the crop has been harvested. In 2012, 85% of the crop had been harvested by this date. The five-year average is 50% by Oct. 20

North Carolina, Texas and Tennessee lead the country in harvest progress (all more than 70% complete).

For soybeans, 94% of the crop is dropping leaves, the average for this time. Harvest is estimated at 63% complete, which is not far behind the five-year average of 69% complete by Oct. 20.

According to more than 350 yield reports to AgWeb’s Corn Harvest Map, favorable yields are being measured across the country. The current national average from the map is 172 bu. per acre, and these reports encompass nearly 200,000 acres.

AgWeb’s Soybean Harvest Map has received more than 200 submissions that cover more than 67,000 acres. The current national average for the map is 48.8 bu./acre.

Yields are greatly varied – ranging from 20 bu./acre to more than 300 bu./acre. So far, the highest corn yield is from Richland, Ill., with a yield of 334 bu./acre.

USDA’s September report pegs the national corn yield average at 155.3 bu./acre. For soybeans, USDA’s yield estimate is 41.2 bu./acre. The October reports were canceled due to the government shutdown, so USDA will likely not update its yield estimates until the Nov. 8 reports.

Farm Journal Pulse

More than 1,600 farmers provided their corn harvest progress via the Oct. 16 Farm Journal Pulse. The question was: What percent of your corn acres have been harvested?

Here are the responses:

  • None: 27%
  • 1-25% harvested: 26%
  • 26-50% harvested: 15%
  • 51-75% harvested: 9%
