Dairy Today magazine was awarded 10 writing and design awards at the Agricultural Media Summit held in St. Paul, Minn., this past summer.

Nine of the awards came in the Livestock Publications Council (LPC) contest. The tenth came in the American Agricultural Editors’ Association (AAEA) contest.

Dairy Today tied for first place for Non-Association Publication in the LPC competition, which is the highest award given within that publication category. Dairy Today’s “greatest strength was overall design and striking cow images on covers. It is less intimidating to read, with use of white space and larger type,” wrote the judges.

Catherine Merlo, Western dairy editor, took home a boatload of writing awards in the contests:

  • First place, AAEA Breaking News, for “ICE Cracks Down with Workplace Audits on Vermont Dairies,” DairyToday.com.

  • First place, LPC Instructional Story, for “Stop the Shrink,” May 2009 issue of Dairy Today.

  • First place, LPC News Story, for “California Goes Dry,” May 2009.

  • First place, LPC In-Depth Reporting (single article), for “The Hurt of Holding On,” December 2009.

  • Second place, LPC Commentary or Essay Article, for “New Animal Well-being Program: A Chance to Prove How Good You Are,” World Ag Expo blog, October 2009.

  • Honorable mention, LPC Technical Article, for “Pipeline Dreams,” November 2009.

Merlo and Jim Dickrell, editor of Dairy Today, received a second-place award for LPC In-Depth Reporting (multiple article series), for the “Hunker Down 2009” issue, published in March 2009.

Dickrell also received an honorable mention, LPC Management Article, for “Be the Cow,” December 2009.

World Dairy Expo’s Official 2009 Program received a second-place award in the LPC category Event/Show Program. The program was produced by Lisa Behnke, World Dairy Expo marketing manager, and the Dairy Today special projects team.
