Data Snapshot of One Western Leg Route

August 17, 2010

Nebraska -- Wonder what it’s like to gather crop data during the Pro Farmer Midwest Crop Tour? On the western leg of the Tour, eight groups of scouts spend the day crisscrossing sections of a state.

Here’s an overview of one day sampling crops in Nebraska:

Meet your team of scouts and depart (early) in the morning.

Drive out of town on your designated route and find your first corn and soybean field combo.

Collect needed data for both crops.

Record data on official crop sheets.

Drive to new fields (about 15 or 20 miles away).

Repeat.

This is the data gathered from one group of scouts:

At the end of the day, all eight groups of scouts meet at the evening stop location and turn in their crop data. Then, Pro Farmer staff compiles all of the data to create the overall corn and soybean estimates for the state.

Is this one set of data representative of Nebraska as a whole? You’ll have to wait and see. Pro Farmer will post the Nebraska figures tonight on AgWeb.com and ProFarmer.com.
