Meet the Whites: Farm Family of the Week

April 27, 2011

The Farm Family of the Week is the White family of Davidson, Oklahoma.

The White family has been farming along the Red River for decades. Homesteaded five generations ago, the family operates irrigated, non-irrigated, conventional and no till acres. They grow cotton, irrigated and non-irrigated wheat, irrigated and non-irrigated corn and peanuts. Whitney, who just returned to the farm after graduating from Oklahoma State University, also has a small cow herd with her brother Austin, who is a freshman at OSU.

Unique challenges face the Whites in their farming operation. Not only are they currently being faced with drought, but extreme wind is a major cause of soil erosion in their area. Joe D., the patriarch of the family, told us that in his entire life, farming, he has never seen a year so dry he couldn’t plant on time. The family was thankful they had the no till ground that they do, because it has turned out to be some of their most moist fields. This year the Whites not only had to plant late, but they weren’t able to plant their normal rotation. Soil moisture was so low, that they couldn’t plant their dry land corn.

The Whites have been chosen as the Farm Family of the Week because of their commitment to sound production practices, their continued dedication to innovation and flexibility and their promise to support future generations of farmers.
