Need Farm Logo? MycroBurst Pairs Growers, Designers

Using a website called MycroBurst, Connecticut-based Walnut Ledge Farm identified a winning logo from Michigan graphic designer Kathryn Van Horn.  

After Joanna Kamis and her husband, Michael, started Walnut Ledge Farm in South Glastonbury, Conn., they knew they needed a logo to market their new business. That’s when a friend told them about MycroBurst, a website where customers can commission artwork from designers around the world.

"It was a good fit for us," says Joanna Kamis, whose 14-acre farm includes maple, walnut and chestnut trees; plums; vegetables; and a pick-your-own-blueberries operation.

Started in 2008, MycroBurst serves as a gathering place for 40,000 designers in more than 100 countries. In addition to logos, they work on projects such as brochures, postcards and websites. The company is based in Langhorne, Penn.

In the case of Walnut Ledge Farm’s logo, Joanna Kamis began by uploading a photo of a carved wooden tree, which resembles a beloved walnut at the entrance to their farm. (Kamis says some of the largest walnut trees in the state grow on her farm and are registered with the Connecticut Botanical Society.) They also provided notes about logo features they wanted to see: Colors such as brown and black, the "clean, sophisticated feeling of an organic/fresh design" and an emphasis on the farm’s family roots.

For just over $200, the couple selected a winning design after reviewing 50 drafts provided by multiple artists and exchanging emails with feedback. The Kamis family went with a logo crafted by graphic designer Kathryn Van Horn of Michigan.

"All in all, it probably took about three weeks," Kamis says of the process.

Designers sign a transfer of ownership agreement, which gives MycroBurst customers full rights to the winning artwork. Van Horn, who holds an associate’s degree in graphic design and has also done printing work, has been chosen for farm-related projects in the past.

"It’s great when you win," Van Horn says. "You get an e-mail when the project ends that informs you that the project holder has chosen a winner which says, ‘Congratulations, your logo was chosen as the winner,’ and then we’re required to save and send into the site the required eight different file formats , along with information regarding the colors and text used. All the client’s needs are covered." Van Horn continues to work with Hidden Meadow Farm of Bridgewater, Maine, which she originally found on MycroBurst.
