Federal initiatives such as the Agricultural Water Enhancement Program (AWEP)can help farmers offset the cost of irrigation-system upgrades. Click here to read more about the program.

Those investments can pay off in a big way: A study conducted by Decision Innovation Solutions found that irrigation in Nebraska—the state with the most irrigated acres at 8.4 million—helped the state avoid losing $7.1 billion in direct economic activity during the 2012 drought.
