The World's No. 1 Ag University Is...

May 9, 2013

British firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranks learning institutions across the globe in 31 different categories based on several metrics. The group added a new category for 2013, "Agriculture & Forestry," and has crowned The University of California, Davis, as the inaugural winner of this category.

"We are thrilled and excited by this evaluation, and it’s gratifying to see that the ranking data validate the breadth and depth of our agricultural programs, which represent a variety of disciplines," says Mary Delany, interim dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Universities are ranked based on four main criteria:

1. The number of times research publications from the institution were cited by other researchers in professional journals.
2. The opinions of other academics in the field.
3. The opinions of employers in the field.
4. The "H-index" – a quantitative and qualitative measurement of research paper output.

UC Davis offers 27 majors to more than 5,800 undergraduate students, and more than 1,000 graduate students have access to 45 total graduate groups and programs. About 60% of the UC Davis 5,000-acre campus is devoted to agricultural research.

"At the institutional level, this ranking signifies rich teaching and research programs that developed and were built during our more than 100 years of service," Delany says. "And at the personal level, it reflects the devotion of more than 300 faculty members who are passionate about their fundamental, translational and applied research, and thoroughly devoted to training the next generation of scientists and agriculturalists."

Other U.S. universities that made the top 10 include Cornell University (3), University of Wisconsin-Madison (4), Texas A&M University (5), Purdue University (6), Oregon State University (8), Pennsylvania State University (9) and Iowa State University (10).
