You know that some day, our children or grandchildren or more distant descendants will be eating real factory-grown meat. But this video of Dr Mark Post of the Netherland’s Maastricht University makes you fret about how soon that may be.
We’ve been through this before with soybean based hamburger products. Back in the 70’s, before the Big Wreck, when there were beef price boycotts and such, we were near panic about the threat of hamburger helper taking over. As it turned out, the stuff is most useful as a "stretcher" and so probably helps rather than hurts demand for hamburger.
So I’m not inclined to panic again just yet.
But science is getting so smart, and the cost of producing beef from cattle is getting so high maybe we should worry.
You think?
Without knowing how much threat fake meat really poses in our lifetimes, we should all think about the idea of using stem cells to produce lab hamburger.
