A cartoonish look at life...

Questions they never asked George Lucas...

Mar 31, 2009

Do you suppose that a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away there was any need for Beano?

Breaking up is hard to do...

Sometimes it can be much more painful than others...

When the people are away the cows will play

Mar 29, 2009

I always liked the expression “party ‘til the cows come home”,  but did you ever wonder exactly what the cows do when we’re not at home?

Piercing humor

Mar 28, 2009

I’ve touched on this topic in earlier posts but I think one more time is in order.  Body piercings are all the rage these days and for that reason I am sure glad I don‘t have any daughters…

(Hooray...the new Rubes web site is finally here! Please pop on over and visit www.rubescartoons.com  Thanks!)

P.S. Thanks Ol' James!

It's Enough to make you say AAARRRRGGGHHH!

Mar 27, 2009

One of the things I most enjoy about this “job” is the freedom of creativity I’m allowed no matter how silly or ridiculous an idea might be. As you may have guessed by now I do enjoy a good pun. The following is one of my favorites, no ifs and or butts…

Spare change?

Mar 26, 2009

With so much uncertainty in the financial markets I don’t think I’m the only one wondering… just exactly where is the safest place to invest these days?

Babeling on...

Mar 25, 2009

Government works projects are nothing new. They’ve been going on for thousands of years. But if some of the old projects were built today I wonder what sort of qualifications you’d need to get hired…

A losing battle

Mar 24, 2009

We live in a semi-rural community on a parcel about the size of an acre. I’m not much of a green thumb but if there’s one thing I excel at it’s growing weeds. I don’t even have to try! In fact they have grown so well over the last few months that we had to have some pros come in today and take care of them. It’s a vicious circle. They grow we pull ‘em. Turn your back for one minute and they take over!

Nyuk, Nyuk, Nyuk!

Mar 23, 2009

At one time, several years back, I got tired of wearing glasses and decided to give contacts a try. I could never quite get the hang of putting them in though…The following pretty much sums up the entire experience…

Why I’ll never make it as a paleontologist…

Mar 22, 2009

There are several theories as to why the dinosaurs went extinct. The most popular one being that a giant asteroid wiped them out. But what if it wasn’t a big rock after all. What if it just happened to be a little something closer to home? Something that could’ve been avoided with the help of a little, or in this case, a big blue pill?

An endless source of energy..no lie!

Mar 21, 2009

My friend up in Oregon just put in a second wood burning stove. He’s a really handy guy…cuts all his own firewood too. Sometimes when I visit him he puts me and my other buddy to work cutting and splitting wood. I have to admit I’d never used a chain saw up until a few years ago. I like it! It’s rewarding to know that the wood you are cutting will be used to heat the place you’re staying. It gives me a real appreciation of what it takes to provide energy for a home.  It is pretty darn labor intensive though, all the cutting and loading and stacking, etc. Just think how much more efficient it would be to have an endless supply of “fuel” right in your own home…

A real crack up!

Mar 20, 2009

So a couple of days ago we get a call from the store where we bought our refrigerator back in 2001. Seems it’s been recalled because of spontaneous combustion. Funny, I always thought that refrigerators were supposed to keep food cold. Here’s a little tribute to those dedicated professionals whose life’s work is making sure our food stays nice and chilly…

Growing up is hard to do

Mar 19, 2009

Sometimes my wife says I’ll never grow up. I say immaturity keeps me young…But alas, we all eventually have to grow up sometime…

Hula Moo-la!

Mar 18, 2009

Went to Hawaii several years back and learned a lot of interesting tidbits about the local flora and fauna. Being raised in the suburbs I had always assumed that coconut milk came from a completely different source. Guess you really do learn something new every day!

It's the truth...No lie!

Mar 17, 2009

When my oldest son (now 21) was 14, he asked if he could get his tongue pierced. Being wise and responsible parents we decided on a compromise and agreed to let him to get his ears pierced…Ouch.

Can you hear me now?

Mar 16, 2009

So my son has worked for a large cellular phone provider for several years. He got us a great family plan at a very attractive price but when I ask him why, when I’m sitting at my desk, not moving, that sometimes my conversation starts to break up and my calls get dropped he tells me the technology isn’t perfect. For some reason I don’t find that reason, logical as it may be, particularly comforting. Suffice to say I still have a land line too.

For the birds

Mar 15, 2009

Sometimes moms just need a break from the kitchen…even mama birds.

Sometimes screaming helps...

Mar 14, 2009

Spent all last weekend doing taxes…What more can I say than, “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGG
GGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”

There, I feel better now.

It’s a dangerous world out there…

Mar 13, 2009

Why, it’s not even safe for peanuts!

What's the catch?

Mar 12, 2009

What a world we live in these days. Tattoos and body piercings are all the rage. It doesn’t seem to take long for a new trend to “catch” on. Before you know it everybody’s hooked…

What goes up must come down

Mar 11, 2009

How many times as a parent have I told my kids not to jump in bed? Kinda make me wonder if parents do the same thing in other cultures…

Patients is a virtue (another bad pun).

Mar 10, 2009

A few years back, as I mentioned in a previous post, I had a slipped disk that required surgery.  I wanted to get as many opinions as possible before going under the knife. This of course meant many doctors visits and lot of waiting and waiting and waiting and...

The perfect way to start the day...

Mar 09, 2009

Monday mornings and coffee were meant for each other, but why just settle for a plain ol’ cup a joe? I like to start my work week off with a little kick...The fresher the better!

On pins and needles

Mar 08, 2009

A few years ago I had the unpleasant experience of having a slipped disk. Acupuncture was suggested as an alternative to surgery (much less expensive too!) so I went for a few treatments from which I gained no relief. I was later told that my acupuncturist didn’t find the following very amusing…

The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind...

Mar 06, 2009

Made it all the way from Hobbs, New Mexico to Espanola today…Another long trek…and boy, was it windy! …Just how windy was it?...

Some catch...

Mar 05, 2009

Lots of driving yesterday. Ended up in a small town in southeast New Mexico. Dining choices were somewhat limited so we ate a well known chain. Sure wish the salmon I ordered was a fresh as this…

Just horsing around in New Mexico

Mar 03, 2009

On my way to Santa Fe to do the Rubes cartoony show on Tuesday eve.

(Cartoonist to help locals get animated - SantaFeNewMexican.com) Beautiful country! Visited the newspapers in Farmington and Gallup. Speaking of Gallup, here’s another silly pun I couldn’t resist…

I’m not a conspiracy theorist but…

Mar 02, 2009

…did you ever notice how the ice-cream man always seems to come around the neighborhood just before dinnertime?
