Jul 20, 2012

Grains Open Up Across The Board Despite Reports Of Precip

Jul 13, 2012

Grains are up across the board at the time of this post. DEC corn up 8 3/4, NOV soybeans up 23, and SEP wheat up 10 1/2. From the map below you can see that parts of Iowa have received up to 1 inch of rain within the last 3 hours. Things remain dry further east were rain is especially  needed, with a storm sweeping through Kentucky missing the southern areas of Illinois and Indiana.

At the 9:30 CT open of pit trading we saw some selling pressure enter the market on the heels of improving precipitation forecasts, but grains have regained their footing as we have a weaker dollar and strong outside markets this morning.

Although demand destruction at these price levels becomes an issue, the trade at this point is firmly focused on the production side of the equation. We don't expect the grain market to see a serious pull back from these prices untill we have soaking rains hitting key growing states.

Slash In Corn Yield Estimate Rallies Market On Open, Grains Drifting Lower At Mid-Day

Jul 11, 2012

We saw DEC '12 corn print a contract high of 748 this morning before being pressured lower. This morning's WASDE report was neutral to bullish for the grains, with the big number being the USDA corn yield forecast coming in at 146 bu./acre. A sub 150 yield has been largely priced into the market as DEC '12 corn has added $2 per bushel in recent weeks.

Mid-Session Update:

The grain complex has now turned negative on the heels of the USDA WASDE report. The screen capture below is from 12:00 Central, and corn is testing 700 on the DEC contract.

Grains Open 15¢-20¢ Higher; December Corn Trades above $7/bu.

Jul 05, 2012

Grains are up once again this morning, with DEC corn printing trades above $7.00 and November soybeans trading up 38 1/4 cents to $15.13. Precipitation failed to hit key growing areas over the 4th of July holiday, and as a result grain futures gapped 15-20 cents higher on the open.

The first weeks of July will be critical to determining yield on this crop, as pollination is well underway in many states. Below is the 6-10 precipitation forecast from Planalytics good for July 10th - 14th. As you can see there are expectations for below average precipitation across the corn belt. Expect this rally to continue until we have rain falling in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana where they need between 8-12 inches of precipitation to end drought conditions.
