TYNE OPEN:

HELLO AND WELCOME TO U-S FARM REPORT, I'M TYNE MORGAN IN FOR JOHN PHIPPS. I HOPE ALL OF YOU ENJOYED THE HOLIDAYS. HERE AT FARM JOURNAL, WE'RE GOING TO KEEP IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT WITH OUR CHRISTMAS IN THE COUNTRY PROGRAM. THAT HAPPENS IN OUR SECOND HALF HOUR OF THE SHOW. IT INCLUDES A SPECIAL HOLIDAY MESSAGE ABOUT CHANGE FROM JOHN PHIPPS. WE'LL ALSO MEET A CRAFTSMAN WHO MAKES MAGICAL SLEIGHS AND AN ARTIST WHO CREATES THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF WORK. YOU MAY HAVE EVEN SEEN SOME OF HIS PIECES IN YOUR CHURCH. BUT THIS HALF HOUR OF OUR SHOW WILL BE OUR NORMAL SHOW, INCLUDING MARKETING ROUNDTABLES DISCUSSING THE EXPORT HICCUPS THE U-S HAS SEEN RECENTLY. BUT FIRST, LET'S GET STARTED WITH THOSE HEADLINES.

HOG AND PIG REPORT:

USDA RELEASED ITS QUARTLERLY HOGS AND PIGS REPORT FRIDAY. THIS IS THE FIRST REPORT TO SHOW THE INITIAL IMPACT PORICINE EPIDEMIC DIAHREAH VIRUS, OR P-E-D-V, IS HAVING ON THE U-S HERD. MEANWHILE, USDA RELEASED ITS QUARTERLY HOGS AND PIGS REPORT FRIDAY. IT SHOWS THE ENTIRE INVENTORY {FOR ALL HOGS AND PIGS} WAS DOWN 1 PERCENT FROM the PREVIOUS YEAR AT 65 POINT 9 MILLION HEAD. THAT NUMBER IS DOWN 2 PERCENT FROM SEPTEMBER FIRST. THE INTERESTING PART OF THE REPORT IS USDA ADJUSTED ITS HOG AND PIG NUMBERS DOWN FROM BOTH THE DECEMBER 2011 THROUGH MAY 2012 REPORT AND THE DECEMBER 2012 THROUGH MAY 2013 REPORT.

BSE ANNIVERSARY:

MEANWHILE,THIS WEEK MARKS TEN YEARS SINCE A MAJOR DISEASE IN CATTLE WAS  DISCOVERED IN THE U-S. IT'S BEEN A DECADE SINCE THE FIRST KNOWN CASE OF B-S-E WAS REPORTED IN THE UNITED STATES.

USDA CATTLE SURVEYS:

MEANWHILE, THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF AG SAYS IT WILL SURVEY CATTLE PRODUCERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY IN JANUARY ON HERD NUMBERS. USDA SAYS THE RESULTS ARE IMPORTANT, AS IT'S TRYING TO GET AN ACCURATE COUNT OF BEEF AND DAIRY CATTLE INVENTORIES FOR 2014. THIS IS FOR BOTH COW CALF  ON CATTLE ON FEED OPERATIONS. THE SURVEY RESULTS WILL BE RELEASED IN ITS JANAURY 31 CATTLE ON FEED REPORT.

PAUL’S TAX:

MAJOR TAX CHANGES ARE BREWING IN CONGRESS FOR 2014, ONE OF WHICH COULD HAVE A BIG IMPACT ON THE COUNTRY'S FARMERS AND RANCHERS. FARM C-P-A PAUL NEIFFER SAYS THE CURRENT SETNATE TAX REFORM PROPOSAL WILL ELINATE THE CASH METHOD OF ACCOUNTING FOR SOME FARMERS AND RANCHERS. INSTEAD, FARMERS WHO MAKE AN AVERAGE INCOME OF 10 MILLION DOLARS OVER 3 YEARS WOULD HAVE TO SWITCH TO ACCRUAL ACCOUNTING.

 FIRST SOYBEANS:

AUGUST RAINSHOWERS ARE ESSENTIAL TO SOYBEAN CROPS, ESPECIALLY IN THE MIDWEST. BUT BECAUSE OF THE LATE PLANTING THIS YEAR, SEPTEMBER SHOWERS WERE JUST AS IMPORTANT. AN ILLINOIS-BASED RESEARCH FIRM - NAMED "FIRST" - ANALYZED THOUSANDS OF SAMPLES AND YIELD RESULTS TO SEE HOW VARIOUS SEED MAKERS DID THIS YEAR. GENERAL MANAGER JOE BRUCE DISCUSSED THE RESULTS WITH CLINTON GRIFFITHS.

 ROUNDTABLE:

IT'S TIME TO TALK MARKETS WITH JOE VACLAVIK AND MIKE FLOREZ.

CHRISTMAS TREES:

JOHN PHIPPS IS AT HOME ENJOYING THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND. WE'LL HEAR FROM HIM DURING OUR SPECIAL PROGRAM "CHRISTMAS IN THE COUNTRY" WHICH IS COMING UP NEXT.
