THIS WEEK ON U.S. FARM REPORT

EPISODE # 2065

MARCH 9-10, 2013

HEADLINES:

AN UPDATED SUPPLY-DEMAND REPORT FROM THE USDA IS SURE TO BE MARKET MOVER.

MEANWHILE, USDA SAYS IT WILL NOT CHANGE THE TIME IT RELEASES ITS MAJOR GRAIN REPORTS, EVEN THOUGH THE C-M-E GROUP HAS DECIDED TO REDUCE ITS 21 HOUR TRADING DAY. ELECTRONIC TRADING WILL RUN FROM 7 PM TO 7:45 A-M CENTRAL TIME SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY. THEN THEY'LL TAKE A 45 MINUTE BREAK. E-TRADING AND FLOOR TRADING WILL RESUME AT EIGHT-30 IN THE MORNING. TWO RECENT WINTER STORMS DELIVERED AN ABUNDANCE OF MUCH NEEDED MOISTURE TO THE CENTRAL PLAINS. WHILE NOT ENOUGH TO BREAK A DROUGHT, WHEAT PRICES DID SLIDE LOWER IN THE PAST WEEK. IN ADDITION, THE 30 DAY OUTLOOK SHOWS PROMISE.

ROUNDTABLE:

THIS WEEK’S ROUNDTABLE…

JOHN’S WORLD:

MOST FARMERS USE MICROSOFT WINDOWS, BUT AS MORE MAPPING TECHNOLOGY UTILIZES IPADS FOR DISPLAYS, MANY ARE GETTING INTRODUCED TO THE SOMETIMES STRANGE WORLD OF APPLE. ONE RECENT QUIRKS IN THE APPLE OPERATING SYSTEM - IOS - IS THE RECENT ADDITION OF APPLE MAPS - SOFTWARE TO COMPETE WITH GOOGLE MAPS. APPLE MAPS WAS SO GOOFY IT SPAWNED A FAMILY OF JOKES, LIKE: A MAN USING APPLE MAPS WALKS INTO A BAR. OR MAYBE A CHURCH. OR A SCHOOL. BA-DUMP-BUMP. LIKE OTHERS, I SIMPLY WAITED UNTIL GOOGLE RUSHED A NEW VERSION MAPS FOR IOS6. BUT AARON POINTED OUT ONE AMAZING PLUS FOR THE MUCH-DERIDED APPLE PRODUCT. IF YOU ZOOM DOWN IN THE SATELLITE VIEW, YOU DO NOT GET F-S-A MAPS LIKE GOOGLE MAPS. INSTEAD YOU GET AN IMAGE THAT WAS TAKEN ABOUT MID-AFTERNOON DURING SEPTEMBER 2011. THE REASON I CAN TELL WITH SUCH ACCURACY IS THE IMAGE CLEARLY SHOWS OUR HOUSE, FARM AND COMBINE WITH AMAZING DETAIL. NOT ONLY CAN YOU SEE THE MACHINES IN THE FIELD, YOU CAN TELL THE COMBINE GRAIN TANK IS ABOUT HALF-FULL, AND THE GRAIN CART HAS THE AUGER OUT. THE TRACKS OF THE GRAIN CART ARE EASILY VISIBLE. DOWN CORN FROM A STRONG WIND IS OBVIOUS, AS WELL AS PLACES WHERE DRY WEATHER STUNTED THE BEANS. IN FACT, THE WHOLE IMAGE IS AMAZINGLY DETAILED - ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU THINK IT'S TAKEN WITH A CAMERA 22,000 MILES AWAY. RURAL AMERICA MAY NOT BE AS ISOLATED AS IT SEEMS ANY MORE. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER THE CLOSEST EYES ARE OFTEN STRAIGHT UP.

2ND HALF

JOHN’S OPEN:

HELLO AND WELCOME TO U-S FARM REPORT, I'M JOHN PHIPPS. AS MANY POLLS AND STUDIES HAVE SHOWN, AMERICANS ARE STRONGLY IN FAVOR OF REDUCING THE BUDGET DEFICIT, BUT EQUALLY AGAINST VIRTUALLY ALL SPECIFIC CUTS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF FOREIGN AID. AS THE SEQUESTER SLOWLY TAKES EFFECT, THIS ILLOGICAL MINDSET IS GOING TO BE TESTED AND NOWHERE MORE THAN AGRICULTURE. THIS WEEK, SENATOR JEFF FLAKE AND REP. JOHN DUNCAN INTRODUCED LEGISLATION TO SHIFT MORE OF THE COST OF CROP INSURANCE TO PRODUCERS. THE INABILITY TO PASS A FARM BILL OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS SHOULD ALERT FARMERS TO THE VERY REAL POSSIBILITY THAT FLAKE AND DUNCAN COULD BE SUCCESSFUL. TYNE MORGAN IS ON VACATION. HERE'S AL PELL WITH THE HEADLINES.

HEADLINES:

THANKS JOHN. AS PART OF THE GOVERNMENT SEQUESTER, THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE MAY BE TAKING BACK SOME OF THE MONEY IT GIVES TO FARMERS. THIS PROCESS IS REFERRED TO AS A "CLAWBACK". MEANWHILE, THE PRESIDENT IS REBUILDING HIS CABINET. THIS WEEK THE PRESIDENT ANNOUNCED HIS PICKS FOR THREE CABINET-LEVEL JOBS INCLUDING TWO THAT ARE KEY TO AGRICULTURE - ENERGY AND EPA. GINA MCCARTHY IS HIS EPA PICK. SHE CURRENTLY HEADS THE EPA'S OFFICE OF AIR AND RADIATION. THE SNOWPACK IN THE SIERRA MOUNTAINS TYPICALLY PROVIDES ABOUT A THIRD OF THE WATER FOR CALIFORNIA'S FARMS AND COMMUNITIES, BUT MAYBE NOT THIS YEAR.

WEATHER:

METEOROLOGIST MIKE HOFFMAN JOINS US NOW WITH THE NATIONAL FORECAST.

COTTON CAPS:

COTTON FARMERS NEVER REALLY KNOW WHERE THEIR FIBER ENDS UP. IT COULD BECOME A SHIRT OR A PAIR OF JEANS ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY OR EVEN THE WORLD. BUT ONE SMALL TEXAS BUSINESS IS HELPING KEEP THE COTTON CLOSER TO HOME. PROVIDED BY THE TEXAS FARM BUREAU, GENE HALL HAS OUR STORY.

TWO CROPS:

THE PLANTING SEASON IS GETTING UNDERWAY IN THE SOUTHERN U-S, BUT IT'S BEEN A SLOW START DUE TO EXCESSIVE MOISTURE. THAT'S A STARK CONTRAST TO THE WESTERN CORN BELT WERE THE MOST RECENT DROUGHT MONITOR SHOWS STATES LIKE SOUTH DAKOTA AND NEBRASKA WITH AREAS OF SEVERE TO EXTREME DROUGHT.  WHAT WILL THIS MEAN FOR USDA'S PROJECTIONS FOR RECORD CORN AND SOYBEAN PRODUCTION IN 2013? REGIONAL REPORTER MICHELLE ROOK LOOKS FOR ANSWERS.

TRACTOR TALES:

AL, I UNDERSTAND WE HAVE A PONY THIS WEEK FOR TRACTOR TALES?" THAT'S RIGHT JOHN! DURING A TRIP TO WASHINGTON STATE, WE CAME ACROSS A RESTORED CLASSIC FROM MASSEY-HARRIS.

CHURCH SALUTE:

TODAY'S COUNTRY CHURCH SALUTE GOES TO THE HISTORIC TAYLORS FALLS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, FOUND IN MINNESOTA'S PICTURESQUE ST. CROIX RIVER VALLEY.

CONSTRUCTED IN 1861, THIS IS THE OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY-USED METHODIST CHURCH IN THE STATE. CONSTRUCTED OF WHITE PINE IN GREEK REVIVAL STYLE, THE CHURCH IS LISTED IN THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES. EARLY SETTLERS TO THE AREA FROM NEW ENGLAND SAY IT REMINDED THEM OF "BACK HOME". ALONG WITH REGULAR WORSHIP SERVICES, THE CHURCH TODAY HAS ALSO BECOME A FAVORITE FOR WEDDINGS. OUR THANKS TO RICHARD ROUSH FOR TELLING US ABOUT THE TAYLORS FALLS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.

MAILBAG:

TIME NOW FOR OUR WEEKLY LOOK INSIDE THE FARM REPORT MAILBAG. HYPOTHETICAL QUESTIONS ARE ALWAYS SOMETHING TO BE AVOIDED, BUT I'VE NEVER LET THAT STOP ME, SO HERE GOES.

As always, we want to hear from you, send comments to mailbag@usfarmreport.com or leave us a voice mail at 800-792-4329.
