Disease Outlook 2017
Sponsored by: DuPont Crop Protection
After several years of heavy disease pressure, scouting in 2017 is critical to identify diseases before they reduce yield.
Disease season is just around the corner, and you may be wondering what to expect this year. While it’s hard to predict environmental conditions, planning for healthy crops now empowers you to act quickly to protect yield.
Will History Repeat Itself?
The past several years, we’ve seen an increase in disease pressure due to wet mid-summer conditions. Heavy disease pressure, more intensive production and reduced tillage are all factors that over time can contribute to an increase in fungal spore buildup in soil, causing disease problems year after year. Use the following risk factors as guidance for deciding where to apply fungicides this season. Focus on fields with:
- A history of disease, especially in recent years
- Continuous corn or soybean production
- Reduced tillage
- Hybrids or varieties with low disease-resistance ratings
- High-yielding corn hybrids and soybean varieties
Be Timely with Fungicide Applications
When green leaf area is compromised due to disease, reduced photosynthesis will lead to poor grain fill. Scout fields early and often to stay ahead of disease development. Extended periods of humid and wet weather with moderate temperatures should also prompt scouting. Be prepared to act quickly if a fungicide application is warranted.
DuPont™ Aproach® Prima fungicide is a good option to control diseases in corn, soybeans and wheat. It has two modes of action and preventive, curative and eradicant activity. On-farm strip trials in 2015 and 2016 showed, on average, a $14 per acre return on investment when Aproach® Prima was applied to corn hybrids and an average $11 per acre return on investment when applied to soybeans.
In heavy soybean white mold areas, DuPont™ Aproach® delivers effective control. When weather and other crop demands make it difficult to time fungicide applications precisely, Aproach® compensates with multiple layers of protection, better distribution throughout the canopy and outstanding rainfastness.
